Excuse the sounds on my robo vac in the background and welcome to my new little series- the two week family fix where I fix things that are making our family life harder than they need to be.

First on the list: morning routine!

What’s not working: everyone is dysregulated. There’s a lot of shouting, rushing and general negative energy.

The fix:
- setting my alarm 15 mins earlier to make sure I’m up and ready before my kids
- Sleeping with my phone outside my room so there’s no more doom scrolling at night, meaning I go to sleep earlier and it’s not the first thing I do when I get up in the morning. This has made my mornings more intentional.

Have I seen a difference: so far yes! Getting ready feels more like self care for me. The kids have been earlier to school the past few days. My frustration levels have deffs decreased.

If any of this is resonating with you, follow along but in a few weeks time I will also be running a new 4 week challenge on sleep testing for parents. How to get better sleep for yourself in a very difficult season of life. Stick around for more details.

This week in my little corner of sleep was hard. There were lots of tears from some very tired mums who felt they were doing a s**t job… because the internet or someone told them they were.

Here are some of the pieces of advice I have given this week.

If you have some advice or a little love note to a very tired parent who might see this, make their day and drop it in the comments below.

We’re all here to support each other! 🩷

If you’ve ever wondered why your child won’t sleep, even though they’re tired and they won’t stop waking overnight… the answer is:

Homeostatic sleep pressure- the natural drive for sleep.

Think of it like a battery that charges while they’re awake (or like a filling cup of water). The longer they’re e awake, the stronger the drive to sleep becomes. When they sleep, that “sleep pressure” resets.

If your child has too much day sleep or goes to bed too early, they may not have built enough sleep pressure to fall asleep or stay asleep. But if they’re awake too long, they may not have reduced enough sleep pressure making it harder to settle to sleep and stay asleep.

The sweet spot? Enough time awake to build the perfect amount of sleep pressure to see them through.

Sometimes we need to be reminded that sleep can really be done any way you want.

We get stuck on all the things we think we ‘have to’ do to make sleep work when really, it’s just all about capacity.

What do you have capacity to do and what don’t you? If you have capacity to resettle, you’re a legend. If you don’t? Still a legend.

If you’re interested in working 1:1 with me so we can make sleep work for you in the same way I make sleep work for me, send me a DM and let’s chattttt (I promise not as much as my kids do).

It’s funny when you have multiple children with such different temperaments how you alter your approach to meet their needs.

I spent half my day talking to one about every little piece of information I could possibly provide about the trip while trying to manage the big feels and sensory overload of another while simultaneously talking to another about the noises outside being cars driving past and sitting in the darkness (jokes I’m on my phone writing this) while they fall asleep.

Holidaying with kids can be truly exhausting because there are soooo many things to manage but honestly, I feel like my duty on this earth is to make core memories with my children. It’s often the silliest things- like it raining nonstop since the second we got here that make the memories.

Do all the things and worry about the sleep later! Life and memories are too important to miss. Do the holiday and sheep your way to make space to create those memories.

When I thought about having kinds, I imagined the sensory play, cute outfits, walks in the park… not 8am games on a Sunday morning in the freezing cold.

I have banged on about this enough in my stories but I thought it was time it had a permanent spot on the grid.

If anyone has been following for a little bit, I finally ordered my boots!!! Bloody excited not to have wet toes anymore!

Assisting your child to sleep is not a problem, until it is and stops working for you.

Maybe you’re touched out. Maybe you can’t transfer them without them waking the second their body hits the cot. Maybe you just want to sit on your own couch for twenty minutes before you go to bed for the night.

Whatever the reason, you can change what isn’t working for you/them anymore.

My ‘From Contact Sleep to Independent Sleep’ masterclass is basically a blueprint for that transition! One that keeps connection at the centre the whole way through and gives you an actionable plan of how to achieve it.

No controlled crying. No cry it out. Not even a little bit.

This is about regulating your child’s nervous system first, building on what already makes them feel safe and adding in support and connection before anything is ever taken away. The change happens so gradually that by the time you start stepping back, they barely notice.

Inside you’ll find a workbook that has you thinking about you, your child and their needs and what this change realistically looks like for your family. There are reflections, a social story and sooooo many resources like the book list in this post. All designed with the intention of supporting your little one through every single step of the transition.

It’s not about removing yourself. It’s about slowly, gently showing them they’re safe without you right there.

For babies, toddlers and kids 0–5 years. $49.

Sleep support for tired parents is looking grim at the moment!

If you’ve been here since the beggining, you’ll know that the only reason I ever started in the sleep space was to be helpful. To help parents wade through the s**t that exists on the internet to make sleep a little easier.

From the explosion of social media, you’ll know that I think this is harder than ever. Sleep has become a billion dollar industry focusing on false promises to sleep deprived parents.

What if we stripped it all back and went back to exactly why I started this page- to truely supporting those who need help.

I want to remove to stigma associated with sleep support and make affordable options.

So, pay what you can for sleep support is coming back and the sleep scholarship fund is about to begin. Affordable support through giving back.

Please share this, like it, repost it. The more you engage with it, the more it will reach people who truely need it.

More details to come in the following days- watch this space.

Who’s telling this grandma that we call this a ‘bad habit’ because it ain’t going to be me?!?!

Tell me you’ve seen anything more calming, regulating, nervous system soothing before?!?

Sometimes I think our society is cray cray! Not because sometimes the way we’re settling genuinely doesn’t feel good but because the norm is that any type of assisting to sleep is a bad habit.

Imagine taking the joy away from this beautiful lady because he might get used to it.

Isn’t that the point?

What do you all think?
