How to check your breasts 🩷

Regular self-checks help you to stay in tune with your body – and can make it easier to notice any changes that might require medical attention. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

✨Find what’s comfortable for you
suggests sitting or standing in front of a mirror – first with your arms by your sides, then held above your head. You might find it easier to feel your breasts in the bath or shower, while applying body lotion, or lying down with your arms overhead.

✨Use your fingers
With the pads of your fingers, gently press each breast in circular motions.

✨Check all around
Feel under your armpit, along your collarbone and behind your ni***es.

✨Notice anything that feels different or new
Look out for lumps, lumpiness, indentation, ni**le discharge, a rash, pain or any other changes in appearance. Talk to your doctor if you notice any of these symptoms.

Self-checks are important, but they don’t replace breast screening. And not all changes mean cancer, but all changes are worth getting checked out.

All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women aged 40+ can book in for a breast screen every two years via the website or by calling 13 20 50.

This is what Blak joy looks like.

Laughing with family. Kicking the footy with the kids. Having a yarn under a warm spring sun.

It’s what we do best. It’s part of who we are, and who we’ve always been. A Community that comes together and celebrates Culture while our boorai’s run around, soaking it all in.

It’s times like these that remind us to check in on our loved ones. Ask them how life’s been treating them. Because some days are tough – but they’re easier tackled together.

How to be breast aware 🩷

Being breast-aware is one of the most empowering ways to look after your health. Here’s how to get started:

✨Know your normal
Notice the usual size, shape, colour and texture of your breasts.

✨Choose a regular time to check each month:
7-10 days after your period starts, or the same day each month if you don’t menstruate.

✨Make it part of your self-care
Check your breasts in the bath or shower, when applying moisturiser or before getting dressed.

✨Look out for changes
Lumps, ni**le discharge, puckering, redness, swelling or anything that feels different. If you notice any of these symptoms, have a yarn with your local ACCO or GP.

✨Book in for a breast screen
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women aged 40 and over can book a breast screen every two years via the BreastScreen Victoria website or by calling 13 20 50.

Contact your local ACCO or GP for more information on how to be breast-aware.

For a lot of us, weekends are for a bit of R&R. But for carers, it can be the most demanding stretch of the week.

When you’re caring for another, looking after yourself can feel like the last thing on the list.

But you can’t pour from an empty cup. Your social and emotional wellbeing (SEWB) matters, too.

We made a guide for Kinship carers covering all things Aboriginal SEWB. It walks you through what Aboriginal SEWB means, why it matters and what your role as a Kinship carer looks like in practice.

It also explains how to use a powerful framework – the Aboriginal SEWB Wheel – to support yourself, and the child or young person in your care every day.
