The Skin Health Institute is a not-for-profit centre of excellence in skin health that delivers highly specialised clinical treatment, education and research for skin diseases, skin cancers and melanoma. Established in 1987, the Skin Health Institute the has been at the forefront of developing new and improved ways to diagnose and manage a wide range of skin disorders. Many of the dermatologists who are involved with the organisation donate their time, valuable skills and experience. Mental Health Month is held in October each year, with taking place today, on October 10th.

This is an important moment to raise awareness of mental health, reduce stigma and encourage people to seek support when they need it.

It’s also an opportunity to pause, check in with ourselves and those around us, and reflect on how we can look after our own mental health and wellbeing.

Here at Skin Health Institute, many of the skin conditions we see on a daily basis at our clinic, come with an increased risk of depression, anxiety and self-isolation. This means it's important to check-in on not just the physical health, but the mental health of our patients.

🇦🇹 Skin Health Institute in Vienna | EADV 2026

Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting our exclusive Skin Health Institute Dermatologist Dinner during the EADV Congress in Vienna, held in the iconic Salon Ziehrer at the Wiener Rathauskeller.

The evening brought together more than 20 dermatologists from across Australia for a fantastic night of education, discussion and connection.

We were thrilled with the response to the event, with our dinner quickly becoming one of the hottest tickets in Vienna last Thursday!

We are incredibly grateful to our partner UCB for their continued support, which allows us to bring our dermatology community together through events like these.

A special thank you to our presenters A/Prof Peter Foley, A/Prof Aaron Robinson and Dr Dimitri Luz for sharing their expertise, and to our Director of Partnerships & Events, Carolyn Dimech, for hosting the evening.

October is World Menopause Month, when we shine a light on midlife and how menopause fits in...

Here at Skin Health Institute, we place particular focus on the impact that menopause has on skin. Declining estrogen levels during menopause cause skin to become thinner, drier, less elastic, and more prone to irritation and sudden breakouts...

Common Menopause Skin Problems include:

☑️ Dryness and Itching (Xerosis): Skin loses its ability to retain water and natural oils, leading to a compromised barrier, flakiness, and constant itchiness.
☑️ Collagen and Elasticity Loss: Women lose about 30% of their skin's collagen in the first five years after menopause, resulting in sagging, jowls, and deeper wrinkles.
☑️ Increased Sensitivity and Rashes: Changes in skin pH make the skin more reactive to weather, fabrics, and products, often worsening conditions like eczema or rosacea.
☑️ Hormonal Acne: Fluctuating hormones and relative increases in androgen levels can trigger unexpected breakouts, even in mature skin.
☑️ Hyperpigmentation: Slower cell turnover and accumulated UV damage make sun spots and dark patches more noticeable and persistent.

Urticaria Day (UDAY) is an opportunity to raise awareness of Urticaria across the world, to help improve the lives of patients and to progress understanding amongst professionals, media and the general public.

Urticaria (commonly referred to as hives) are pink or red itchy rashes, that may appear as blotches or raised red lumps (wheals), on the skin.

When hives first start to appear, they can be mistaken for mosquito bites. Swellings usually disappear within minutes to hours in one spot but may come and go for days or weeks at a time, sometimes longer. In most cases hives are not due to allergy and they can be effectively treated with a non-drowsy antihistamine.

When hives occur most days for more than six weeks this is defined as chronic (ongoing) urticaria, which may require additional medication.

Today, on World Atopic Eczema Day, Skin Health Institute joins the global community in raising awareness of atopic eczema and recognising the millions of people living with the condition and the challenges it can bring to everyday life.

At Skin Health Institute, we are committed to improving outcomes for people living with eczema through specialised clinical care, access to treatment options, education, support and ongoing research.

We are currently recruiting participants for a number of clinical trials investigating potential new treatments for atopic eczema. If you or someone you know is living with moderate to severe eczema and would like to learn more, please contact our Clinical Trials team at [email protected].
