Serena had a blood test four months into changing her diet. Her words:

"The eGFR result is 63, up from 50 on the last test. It states normal microalbumin and albumin, and creatinine has dropped from 97 to 80!"

Stage 3 to stage 2, in four months, in New South Wales.

Then she wrote again, because she had forgotten something.

"As I have Sjogren's Syndrome, I also suffer from dry mouth and dry eyes. Both have subsided considerably in the last couple of weeks. I have not had to use eye drops hardly at all, and I have given up the special mouthwash I used to use."

That second message matters more than the first.

Plenty of kidney disease does not come from blood pressure or blood sugar. It comes from an autoimmune condition, and when you treat the inflammation driving the autoimmune side, the kidneys are not the only thing that answers. Serena's eyes and mouth improved before her kidney numbers did, because that is the order these things move in.

If your CKD came through an autoimmune route, nothing on your feed is written for you. This one is.

Her last line, which we liked most of all: "Will certainly keep going with the Kidney Solution, even though I fall off the wagon occasionally."

She used the diet and supplements from the program. Results are individual, and Serena's are recorded exactly as she wrote them.

People ask why we don't just sell the one herb with the best research behind it.

Because your kidneys don't decline for one reason.

Eight herbs. Each doing a different job.

🌿 Astragalus goes after the protein leaking into your urine.
🌿 Dan Shen opens blood flow to filtering units that are starving for it.
🌿 Cordyceps feeds the cellular energy those units run on.
🌿 Tienchi, Rehmannia, Schisandra, Fo-Ti and ginger each reach something the others cannot.

One herb answers one question. Your decline is asking several at once. That is the entire design.

Kidney Prime supports healthy creatinine and urea levels.

People improve their kidney function naturally. It happens; it is not rare, and this is one of the tools they do it with.

Your next blood test is about three months out. The only question that matters is what you will have changed by then.

Unpopular opinion: a good week does not have to show up on a blood test.

We have built a whole culture around the number. You wait three months, you give blood, and a figure decides whether the last ninety days counted.

That is a terrible way to measure a life, and it is not even good science.

Here is what a good week actually looks like, none of which your panel will mention.

You slept through. You cooked twice instead of ordering. You walked when you did not want to. You said no to something that would have cost you Tuesday. You took the lot, every day, without making a thing of it. You had a conversation that was not about your kidneys.

Every one of those is doing work. Blood pressure, inflammation, blood sugar, sleep, the load your kidneys carry at three in the morning. None of them has a line on your report.

And eGFR is the slowest thing on that report to move. It shifts last, after energy, after sleep, after the markers nobody shows you. Judging a good month by the number that moves most reluctantly is how people quit at exactly the point things were starting to work.

Count the week. Let the number catch up.

Which of those did you manage this week? πŸ‘‡

Most supplement labels are designed to be looked at, not read.

Five things decide whether what is in the bottle is worth your money.

1. The form, not just the mineral. Magnesium oxide and magnesium glycinate are both "magnesium" on the front. They behave very differently in your body. The form is in the ingredients list, in smaller type than the name.

2. The dose per serving, and what a serving is. A label can say 500 mg and mean three capsules. Check the serving size before you compare anything to anything.

3. Where the actives stop, and the fillers start. Anything after "other ingredients" is not doing anything for you. A long list there is a flag.

4. Whether anyone independent has tested it. Third-party testing is the difference between a company saying what is in the bottle and someone else confirming it.

5. What it does not say. No batch number, no manufacturing standard, no way to contact a person: that absence is information.

None of this requires expertise. It requires turning the bottle around and reading the small side instead of the big side, which takes about eight seconds once you know what you are looking for.

"I've read you shouldn't take magnesium capsules if your kidneys are struggling. Is that true?"

Both, in a way, and that is exactly why this one causes so much confusion.

The warning you have read is not invented. Healthy kidneys clear excess magnesium easily. As function falls, that clearing slows, and magnesium can build up. So the caution is real.

What is wrong is turning that into a blanket rule about stages.

Your blood level decides this. Not your stage. I have had people at stage 5 using magnesium safely because their levels allowed it, and I have had people far earlier who should not have been on it. The number tells you; the stage does not.

The genuine exclusion is dialysis, because magnesium is generally in the dialysate already. That is a different situation, and it needs your unit's input.

So the order I would go in. Get your magnesium measured, and ask for red cell magnesium rather than serum, because serum can look fine while your stores are not. Get your diet carrying as much as it reasonably can. Then, if a supplement is warranted, let the number and your prescriber set it, not a number you read somewhere.

One more thing worth separating out, because this is where most of the confusion starts. The rule about eGFR 35, where an alkalising formula switches from citrates to sodium bicarbonate, is a rule about which alkalising product suits you. It is not a rule about whether you can have magnesium at all. Two different questions that get merged constantly.

Your nephrologist said fine. Get the number, and you will both know for certain.

7 foods that take the acid load off your kidneys at every meal.

Acidity is the one driver that is easily treatable by diet, and it is the lever almost nobody is shown.

Every meal either adds acid or takes it away. Your kidneys clear the difference. Shift the ratio, and you give them less to do, three times a day, for years.

πŸ₯‘ Avocado. Good fat and a source of glycine. A quarter is a portion.
πŸ‹ Lemon and lime. Sharp on the tongue, alkalising once digested. The thing most people find hardest to believe.
πŸ₯¬ Leafy greens and most vegetables. The bulk of the plate, not the garnish.
🌱 Sprouts. Cheap, fast, and among the most alkalising things you can grow on a windowsill.
🫘 Tempeh and miso. Fermented soy, specifically beneficial in kidney inflammation.
🌾 Millet, quinoa and wild rice, in place of wheat and corn.
πŸ«’ Flax, pumpkin and sunflower seeds. By the tablespoon.

The ratio to aim for while you are rebuilding: three-quarters of the plate alkaline-forming, one quarter everything else.

And you can check whether it is working without waiting three months. A pH strip on your first morning urine, aiming for the 6.75 to 7.25 zone. Cheap, immediate, and almost nobody is told it exists.

Millet is the grain almost nobody in the kidney world talks about, and it should be.

This one is twenty minutes, it feeds two or three, and it carries real magnesium without the potassium load that rules out most of the usual magnesium foods.

Oriental Millet with Tofu
πŸ₯£ 1 cup millet
πŸ₯£ 2 Tbsp olive oil
πŸ₯£ 1 small onion, cubed
πŸ₯£ 1 red pepper, finely sliced
πŸ₯£ 1 grated carrot
πŸ₯£ 1 Tbsp water
πŸ₯£ Half a cup shredded tofu
πŸ₯£ Quarter tsp turmeric
πŸ₯£ Pinch of sea salt

Bring two cups of water to a boil, add the millet with a little salt, simmer covered for 15 to 20 minutes until tender, then drain. SautΓ© the onion, pepper and carrot until soft. Add the tablespoon of water and stir. Add the tofu and turmeric, season, then stir the millet through and cook on low for five more minutes.

Per serve: 490 mg potassium, 42 mg sodium, 9.7 g protein.

That sodium figure is the one to notice. Forty two milligrams for a full dinner, because the turmeric and the sweetness of the carrot are doing the work the salt shaker usually gets credit for.

From the low-potassium recipe collection. Save this one for a night you cannot face cooking.

The first time you opened the fridge after diagnosis and had no idea what was safe.

You stood there with the door open. Everything in front of you had become a question. The cheese, the orange juice, the leftovers you made on Sunday without thinking twice.

So you closed it and had toast.

Almost everyone does a version of that week. You ate almost nothing because nothing felt allowed, and nobody had given you a list.

Then it changes. Not through willpower. Through about four decisions that turn into habits.

πŸ‹ You learn which handful of things actually matter, instead of fearing everything equally.
πŸ‹ You find six meals you like and stop auditioning new ones.
πŸ‹ You work out your own portions instead of following a leaflet written for someone else.
πŸ‹ You stop reading every label, because you already know what's in the things you buy.

And one ordinary evening you open the fridge, take out what you need, and cook. No pause. No question.

You will get there faster than that first week makes you believe.

Your doctor checked your magnesium. Almost certainly the wrong one.

Standard panels measure serum magnesium, the magnesium floating in your blood. The trouble is that less than 1% of your body's magnesium is in your blood. Your body guards that number hard, pulling from bone and muscle to keep it in range, so it can read perfectly normal while your actual stores run down.

The one worth asking for is RBC magnesium, measured inside the red blood cells. It reflects what you have, rather than what is in transit.

Ask for it by name. "Can I have a red cell magnesium, not just serum." It is not expensive or exotic; it is just not routine, which is a different problem.

Why bother at all? Magnesium does real work for kidney patients: blood pressure, cardiovascular protection, blood sugar steadiness, inflammation, and stones.

And the rule almost everyone gets wrong: whether you can take it is decided by your blood level, not by your stage. People at stage 5 use magnesium when their levels allow. Dialysis is the genuine exclusion, because magnesium is generally in the dialysate already.

Food first, always. Then test properly, then supplement to what the test says.

Get that sequence right, and magnesium is one of the quieter levers that improves how your kidneys are working, rather than another bottle on the shelf.

What you drink either helps your kidneys or adds to their load. What's in your glass?

Not what you think you should be drinking. What you actually had yesterday.

We ask because this is the easiest thing to change and the one nobody audits. Six coffees reads very differently from six glasses of water, and most people have never counted.
