🌿 PERIMENOPAUSE, DYSAUTONOMIA & THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
When it’s not always just your hormones.
A racing heart.
Dizziness when standing.
Unexplained fatigue.
Brain fog.
Digestive disturbances.
Feeling unusually hot, cold or overwhelmed.
For many women navigating perimenopause, these symptoms can feel confusing, unpredictable and sometimes frightening.
And too often, they’re attributed entirely to anxiety or hormonal fluctuations.
But what if we need to look a little deeper?
🧠 THE AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM CONNECTION
Our autonomic nervous system (ANS) regulates essential functions that happen automatically, including heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, temperature regulation and sweating.
During perimenopause, fluctuating oestrogen and progesterone can influence thermoregulation, sleep and cardiovascular autonomic responses.
Interestingly, many symptoms experienced during the menopausal transition overlap with those associated with dysautonomia, an umbrella term describing disorders of autonomic nervous system function.
One example is Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS).
Women with POTS may experience an excessive increase in heart rate when standing, often accompanied by dizziness, palpitations, fatigue, brain fog and exercise intolerance.
💚 SO, IS THERE A CONNECTION?
There is growing interest in how reproductive hormones influence autonomic function and symptom severity in women with POTS.
However, the relationship between perimenopause and dysautonomia remains an evolving area of research.
Importantly, perimenopause does not automatically cause POTS, and experiencing these symptoms does not necessarily mean someone has dysautonomia.
Other considerations may include iron deficiency, thyroid dysfunction, dehydration, medication effects, cardiovascular conditions and sleep disturbances.
This is why investigating symptoms rather than simply attributing everything to hormones matters.
🌿 THE EMBRACE FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE APPROACH
At Embrace, I support women navigating perimenopause, menopause and complex, overlapping health concerns.
My approach considers the interaction between:
✨ Hormonal transitions
✨ Metabolic and cardiovascular health
✨ Nutritional status and iron balance
✨ Gut health and digestive function
✨ Sleep and stress physiology
✨ Autonomic nervous system symptoms
Understanding these relationships helps guide personalised support and identify when further medical assessment is appropriate.
Because not every symptom is hormonal.
And not every symptom is anxiety.
Sometimes the most important question we can ask is WHY.
💚 OCTOBER IS MENOPAUSE & DYSAUTONOMIA AWARENESS MONTH
An opportunity to raise awareness, encourage informed conversations and remind women that persistent or unexplained symptoms deserve appropriate investigation.
If you’re experiencing new palpitations, dizziness or fainting, please seek medical assessment. Chest pain, severe breathlessness or fainting with concerning symptoms warrants urgent medical care.
🌿 READY TO EXPLORE YOUR HEALTH MORE DEEPLY?
I offer a complimentary 20-minute Hormone Clarity Call to discuss your concerns and explore whether the Embrace approach is right for you.
