Shoulder pain at night is common with rotator cuff problems and frozen shoulder. A lot of it comes down to position.

• On your back: rest the sore arm on a pillow, from elbow to hand, so it sits slightly forward of your body.
• On your good side: hug a pillow and rest the sore arm on top so it stays level.
• Shoulder pain with chest tightness or trouble breathing can be a heart attack. Call 000.

NDIS plan managed vs self managed: how each one pays your physio in Melbourne, and which providers you can use.

• Plan managed: a plan manager pays your providers, registered or unregistered, and keeps the records.
• Self managed: you pay providers, can negotiate prices, and keep records for 5 years.
• NDIA managed: the NDIA pays your providers, who must be registered NDIS providers.

Numb feet make balance harder. Peripheral neuropathy exercises can help you feel steadier on your feet.

• When your feet are numb, balance relies more on your eyes, so use night lights and turn lights on before you walk in.
• Try weight shifts, heel raises and toe raises at a kitchen bench, with a sturdy chair behind you.
• Diabetes Australia recommends checking your feet every day and a thorough foot exam at least once a year.

Legs ache when you walk but ease when you lean on a trolley? Spinal stenosis physiotherapy aims to help you walk further.

• Symptoms are often worse with standing, walking or leaning back, and eased by bending forward or sitting.
• Try walk-and-rest rounds: walk until symptoms build, rest leaning forward, repeat, and add a little time each week or so.
• New bladder or bowel problems, or quickly weakening legs, need urgent medical care.

Today is World Osteoporosis Day, a good moment to think about bone health for yourself or someone you love.
People who have broken a hip are at risk of another fracture, so falls prevention and bone health treatment are part of recovery.
Ask your GP about bone protection medicines. Your physio can adapt exercises if you have osteoporosis.

How often should you see a physio? It depends on your goals, your condition and how recently things changed.

Visits are often closer together at the start, then spaced out as you become more independent.
Your home program between visits drives most of the change, so keep it realistic and link it to your day.
Your physio should review your progress regularly, rather than booking sessions indefinitely.

The Timed Up and Go test takes less than a minute. Here is what your time can tell you about falls risk.

• It times how long it takes to stand up from an armchair, walk 3 metres, turn, walk back and sit down.
• The CDC's STEADI program says an older adult who takes 12 seconds or more is at risk of falling.
• It is one part of a full falls assessment, not a diagnosis. Only try it at home with someone beside you.

• Physio may work on balance, walking, strength, coordination, arm and hand function, and fatigue.
• Goals are specific, like walking to the letterbox safely, and broken into smaller steps.
• Funding may come from the TAC, the NDIS, Medicare, DVA, aged care programs or private payment.

How to use crutches safely: the right fit, walking patterns and stairs, based on Safer Care Victoria guidance.

• Underarm crutches should sit two finger widths below the armpit. Take your weight through your hands.
• Stairs: up with the good leg first, down with the injured leg and crutches first.
• Wear supportive non-slip shoes, never just socks, and watch for wet floors and rugs.
