I have an interesting relationship with time.

I used to see myself as someone who managed time really well. I was efficient, productive and contained.

Then perimenopause arrived, and everything shifted.

My body clock slowed down. It was no longer aligned with the external clock.

Everything seemed to take so much longer — both in my brain and my body.

Interestingly, I liked something about this slowing down.

Yet I struggled to keep up with the linearity of time.

The 60-minute clock.

The number of tasks to complete.

The expectation to remain productive and efficient within a capitalist model that measures our worth through what we accomplish.

I brought this into my personal work, exploring how I could get better at managing time.

I tried alarms, reminders and multiple watches.

Nothing really changed.

I am now trying to reacquaint myself with what time feels like on the inside.

How much is enough on a given day?

What can my body handle?

Can I allow myself to move at a different pace without interpreting it as a failure?

I am learning not to be harsh or self-critical when I go over time.

Perhaps the work isn't always about managing time better.

Perhaps it is also about changing my relationship with time.

When there is not enough
energy
memory
capacity
motivation
I am borrowing

rest
love
I am leaning into
kindness
crying when tears arrive
taking off layers when heated
slowing down when things feel too much
I lean into support
grateful when others look out for me
remind me when I miss the mark
when words fail to emerge or fumble
when everything feels hard and endless

“Imagine you are walking in a park and you notice a sculpture. You look at it, sense it, and explore it. Then you go around it and look at it from a different place. It is the same sculpture, and yet you perceive it differently now. Then you change places again and look at the sculpture from another perspective. One perspective is not enough to meet the sculpture.”
— Jan Roubal

I see that the body is always present, supporting vulnerability.

It is in the way the hands come together, the breathing slows down, and the shape of the body shifts to be held more wholly by gravity.

In these moments, self-acceptance can arrive, communicating:

I am here with you.

Sometimes the voices of shame and self-criticism are so loud that these quieter whispers are very challenging to hear.

I sense in my practice that the more I can shift from fear to curiosity—even in the presence of the most challenging emotions—the more spaciousness becomes possible.

Perhaps another perspective allows something else to be seen.

You make an impression
when you witness
my feelings
raw
when you offer me
no advice
nor practical suggestions
or how you are handling everything
you sit in silence
in the sacred place of trust
your warm presence is enough
you share your curiosity
with few words
I sense your body
responding to the marks I make
without carrying the burden of change
or feeling responsible
I continue
to lay it bare
your quiet support
makes an impact

“The mind is like the wind
and the body is like the sand.
If you want to know how
the wind is blowing,
look at the sand.”
— Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen

Often, clients who have never experienced body-led therapies imagine that there are no words involved — or that thoughts and cognition are somehow the enemy in the room.

I sense the brain as part of the body. What matters is when and how it is invited into the process.

I like experimenting with creating body shapes in response to words and experiences. It can be fascinating to notice how the body responds — the shapes, gestures and movement impulses that emerge — and what they reveal about our associations with a word.

In this process, I work with ordinary words:

yes
no
maybe
not now

I notice that sometimes my body flows, and other times it doesn't.

The intention isn't to choose between the body and the brain.

It is to become curious about how they might learn to work together.

“We're all islands shouting lies to each other across seas of misunderstanding.”

― Rudyard Kipling

There are times when disconnection and hurt take away my capacity to find joy.

The “what’s wrong” attention returns, and there seems to be no way to find resources.

Even with repeated reminders, the need to be alone feels right.

Others may witness these moments, wanting to reach out, extend a hand, perhaps take away the suffering — and yet, it feels unhelpful.

I notice what I need right now.

I notice myself moving away, merging with the environment.

While it feels scary to be here, I notice that the distance helps me reset.

I’m not sure when I will walk towards you,
but I know that I need to stay here
for some more time.

when I feel Meh
Detached
I worry
about not being happy
the enormous pressure
of joy
I notice
that reality is messy
the idealised expectations
I have set for myself
how I mask
for acceptance
instead
of seeking support
softening into
unconditional acceptance
numb makes sense

“But most days,
I wander around feeling invisible.
Like I'm a speck of dust
floating in the air
that can only be seen
when a shaft of light hits it.”
— Sonya Sones

There can be a profound aloneness in the terrain of complex trauma.

A sense that no one can quite reach the experience of what feels uncommunicable.

There can be an internalisation of I am the problem.
I am too much.
And still, a longing to be met.

In this experience, how might I find support — even when it is not with another human?

Can I sense the ground beneath me?
The air touching me?
The presence of the more-than-human world reminding me that I am not entirely alone?

I take this inquiry into the quiet of a studio after sunset.

The emptiness of the space haunts me.

I find myself needing a corner.
Something to come alongside.
Something that contains me.

And I notice—

I like being here.
