“But how do you adjust a toddler who won’t sit still?” 😂

The short answer? Make it fun!

Toddler chiropractic appointments can look a little different from what you might expect.

There might be toys, games, stickers, plenty of giggles and the occasional toddler who has absolutely no intention of cooperating with my plans. 😂

And that’s completely okay!

One of my favourite things about working with toddlers is finding ways to make their appointments feel comfortable, safe and fun.

Rather than expecting little ones to lie still on a table, I adapt my approach to suit their age, developmental stage and personality.

Sometimes that means assessing them while they play, taking breaks when needed or turning parts of their appointment into a game.

When hands-on care is appropriate, the techniques I use are gentle and modified for their age and individual needs.

So why might parents bring their toddler to see a chiropractor?

Some families seek an assessment because they’ve noticed:
🌿 A preference for turning or moving in one direction
🌿 Changes in posture or movement
🌿 Concerns about mobility or physical development
🌿 Musculoskeletal discomfort or stiffness

Others simply have questions about how their little one is moving and developing.

My role is to listen, assess their musculoskeletal function, discuss what’s normal for their age and determine whether chiropractic care is appropriate or another health professional would be better suited.

And if we spend half the appointment playing with stickers? Well, that’s just part of working with toddlers! 💚

Does your baby ALWAYS turn their head to the same side?

It’s something I frequently see when assessing newborns and young babies in practice.

Parents often tell me:

💬 “They always look to the left when they’re sleeping.”

💬 “They seem to feed better on one breast.”

💬 “I’ve noticed one side of their head is getting a little flat.”

While it’s common for newborns to develop positional preferences, consistently favouring one direction can sometimes indicate tightness or restricted movement through the neck.

This can be associated with conditions such as congenital muscular torticollis and positional plagiocephaly (flattening of the head).

The good news? 💚

Early identification and appropriate management can help improve neck movement and reduce the risk of ongoing head shape changes.

As a chiropractor with a special interest and postgraduate training in paediatric care, I assess neck movement, head shape, posture and age-appropriate motor development when examining infants.

✨ And there’s plenty you can do at home to support your baby’s movement and development!

Tummy time is one of my favourite ways to encourage babies to strengthen their neck, shoulders and upper body, while giving the back of their head a break from pressure.

And remember, tummy time doesn’t have to mean lying flat on the floor!

From bump to baby 🤍 The best before and after 🥰

The first photo was Christina at her last pregnancy appointment with me, getting ready to meet her little one.

And the second… baby Mykael at his very own check-up 🥹

There’s something so special about supporting a mum through pregnancy and then having the privilege of meeting and caring for the little person who was once that beautiful bump.

Welcome to the world, Mykael 🤍 And congratulations, Christina.Grigoriou , Tass and Dean… it’s been such a privilege to be part of this chapter with you.

You may have seen us gently turning a baby’s head, touching their hands or feet, or changing their position during an infant consultation… but what are we actually looking for?

Primitive reflexes are automatic responses that babies are born with. They play an important role in early feeding, protection and movement, and they give us useful information about how a baby’s brain, body and nervous system are communicating.

During an assessment, we look at whether these responses are present, symmetrical and appropriate for the baby’s age. We also consider them alongside the baby’s birth and feeding history, muscle tone, head and neck movement, body symmetry, comfort in different positions and overall development.

No single reflex gives us the whole answer, and babies do not all develop according to an identical timeline. Primitive reflex assessment is simply one part of building a broader picture of how your baby is moving and adapting right now.

If you have concerns about your baby’s feeding, head preference, tummy time, comfort or early movement, get in touch.

This information is general in nature and does not replace assessment or advice from your child’s GP, paediatrician or other healthcare provider.
