“MY CONCUSSION WAS MONTHS AGO. WHY DO I STILL FEEL LIKE THIS?”

The headache is better.

Your balance has improved.

You can function at work again.

But…

Exercise wipes you out.

You feel dizzy when you’re upright for too long.

Your heart rate seems to jump disproportionately with activity.

Heat makes everything worse.

Your brain feels foggy.

And every time you try to increase your exercise, your symptoms flare.

If this sounds familiar, autonomic function may be one piece of the puzzle.

The autonomic nervous system helps your body respond to changes in:
🏃 activity
🧍 posture
🌡️ temperature
❤️ cardiovascular demand
😴 sleep and recovery

Following concussion, some people experience problems with autonomic regulation that can contribute to ongoing symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, exercise intolerance, headaches and difficulty tolerating increased physical demands.

That doesn’t mean autonomic dysfunction is responsible for every persistent concussion symptom. Concussion recovery is complex, and there can be multiple contributing systems.

Understanding why symptoms are being triggered can be an important part of building a graded return to activity. Our Neuro-trained chiropractors will assess your autonomic nervous system as part of your post-concussion assessment to formulate your rehab plan. Chiro Dr Tom has a particular interest in sports chiropractic and neuro-rehabilitation to assess and manage concussions.

Maybe you could put your legs behind your head as a kid.

Maybe your elbows or knees bend further than everyone else’s.

Maybe people have always told you:

“You’re so flexible!”

But now you’re also dealing with things like:

😵‍💫 dizziness
❤️ strange heart-rate symptoms
😴 persistent fatigue
🍽️ gut problems
🔥 difficulty tolerating heat
🏃 poor exercise tolerance
🤕 headaches or migraine

And you’re wondering…

Could any of this be connected?

For some people with hypermobility spectrum disorders or hypermobile EDS, autonomic symptoms are part of the broader clinical picture.

The relationship is complex, and being hypermobile doesn’t automatically mean you have dysautonomia.

But there is recognised overlap between connective tissue disorders (flexibility), autonomic symptoms and gut problems.

So sometimes the question isn’t:

“What’s wrong with my gut?”

or

“Why do I get dizzy?”

or

“Why can’t I tolerate exercise?”

It may be worth stepping back and asking:

“What else is happening in my body?”

Because sometimes seemingly unrelated symptoms are happening alongside each other for a reason.

Take a holistic approach to your health at Body & Brain Centre.

Low back pain is the biggest cause of disability worldwide and majority of the time, there’s no specific cause. It’s not a disc, nerve or arthritis problem. Instead pain arises from HOW the joints, muscles and nerves are moving, coping to stresses and responding to everyday life. Luckily, there might be ways to manage it with movement, rehabilitation, reducing inflammation, and individualised care.

World Spine Day acts as a reminder to take care of your spine and don’t struggle with back pain just because it’s common!

If you or someone you know is in pain, we’d love to help.

YOUR BODY HAS AN “AUTOPILOT”. How is it coping?

You don’t consciously tell your heart to beat faster when you exercise.

You don’t have to remember to regulate your body temperature.

You don’t consciously tell your gut to move food through your digestive system.

And you don’t think:

“Better adjust my blood pressure now.”

Thankfully, your autonomic nervous system does a lot of this for you.

It constantly adjusts what’s happening inside your body in response to things like:
➡️ standing up
➡️ exercising
➡️ eating
➡️ sleeping
➡️ stress
➡️ changes in temperature

But when this system isn’t regulating things properly, the symptoms can be surprisingly wide-ranging.

You might notice:
• dizziness or light-headedness
• unusual heart-rate or blood-pressure responses
• gut problems
• temperature intolerance
• sweating changes
• fatigue
• poor exercise tolerance
• headaches
• brain fog
• fatigue

And different people can have very different combinations of symptoms.

That’s why “dysautonomia” isn’t one neat symptom checklist.

It’s an umbrella term — and there are many different diagnoses, causes and presentations.

If this resonates with you, you might benefit from our holistic approach.

🧠💪 Creatine: more than just a gym supplement?

You might know creatine as a supplement used by athletes, but research is exploring its potential role in women’s health, too!

🔬 What does the research suggest?

💪 Muscle strength: Creatine combined with resistance training can help improve strength and support gains in muscle mass.

🦴 Bone health: Researchers are investigating whether creatine may complement exercise to support bone health, particularly as women age.

🧠 Brain function: Early research suggests possible benefits for aspects of memory and cognition, although more evidence is needed.

🌸 Women’s health: With growing interest in perimenopause, menopause and healthy ageing, researchers are exploring how creatine may fit into women’s changing nutritional needs.

So, should you be taking it?

Not necessarily! Creatine isn’t a magic fix, and the evidence isn’t equally strong for every potential benefit. Your individual health, diet, activity levels and goals all matter.

At Body & Brain Centre, our dietitians and naturopaths can help you make sense of the latest nutrition research and work out what may be appropriate for you.

🦴 What if your bones could help your brain heal?

We often think of bones as the body’s scaffolding — something that holds us up and protects our organs.

But your bones are also biologically active tissues that can communicate with the rest of your body.

New research has uncovered a fascinating bone–brain connection.

This month researchers found that compressing the leg bone (tibia), supported movement and cognitive recovery after brain injury in mice and pigs.

The bone’s sensory cells appeared to translate mechanical signals into chemical signals that travelled through the bloodstream.

These signals included factors associated with:
🧠 protecting neurons
🧠 reducing chronic inflammation
🧠 supporting neuronal regeneration
🧠 improving brain recovery

So the question becomes:

Could loading your bones influence your brain?

We already know that movement and exercise affect far more than muscles and cardiovascular fitness.

Some of the benefits of movement may occur through the bone itself — and the signals it sends to the brain.

It’s early research, and this does not mean that simply exercising a particular bone will treat a brain injury.

But it gives us a fascinating new way to think about movement:

Your bones aren’t just supporting your body.
They may be communicating with it. 🦴🧠

And the bone–brain conversation may be much more important than we previously realised.

You’re not just “tired.” 💛

Sometimes your body can send signals that feel confusing:
✨ Feeling dizzy when you stand up
✨ A racing heart that seems to come from nowhere
✨ Exhaustion after activity that used to feel easy
✨ Brain fog, headaches, or difficulty concentrating
✨ Gut symptoms that seem unpredictable
✨ Feeling worse in the heat
✨ Good days followed by unexpected crashes

These symptoms can have many different causes — but one possibility that is often overlooked is dysautonomia.

Dysautonomia is an umbrella term for conditions that affect the autonomic nervous system — the system that helps regulate the body’s automatic functions, including heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, temperature control, sweating, and energy regulation.

Because this system is involved in so many parts of the body, symptoms can appear in places that seem completely unrelated.

Throughout October, we’ll be exploring the ways the autonomic nervous system can influence health, symptoms, and everyday life.

Because sometimes the things that feel disconnected… are actually connected. 🤍
