Treating the pregnant patient is one of my most favorite things.. and I am so blessed to be working along side a group of osteopaths at The fertile project who are just as passionate about working with pregnant bodies as myself.
We have all done extra studies in the field of obstetrics.. where we see our role within pregnancy care is so much more then helping with aches and pains. We also help with
👉🏽labour preparation
👉🏽pregnancy yoga and Pilates
👉🏽optimal maternal positioning and spinning babies
👉🏽incontinence and pelvic floor treatment and rehab
👉🏽pelvic floor labour prep.
👉🏽specific treatments aimed to create space in the pelvis and to release tension in the uterine ligaments.
👉🏽pregnancy exercise safe programs
👉🏽labour breathing and pushing strategies
👉🏽education on the immediate postpartum period!
Many facets of pregnancy care is multifactorial and I truly believe the fertile project with its exceptional practitioners ranging from naturopathy .modernmedicine to acupuncturists nutritionists and massage therapy along with our osteopaths together are Melbournes premier pregnancy (including preconception & postnatal care) clinic.
If there are any specific topics you’d like covered please let us know!

Everyday your hormones are doing something different - one day oestrogen is at its highest, another day progesterone dominates, and somewhere amongst it all follicle stimulating hormone, luteinising hormone and testosterone are having their turn too⁣
⁣
When we are assessing 𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦, we need to test our hormones at the most relevant times across our entire menstrual cycle. The menstrual cycle is called a cycle for a reason- it is the entire ‘monthly’ cycle of hormonal, physical and emotional changes.⁣
⁣

- 𝘉𝘭𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘴𝘦 (menstruation): all our hormones are at their lowest, this is the perfect time to test FSH, LH & oestrogen. FSH is developing the follicles. ⁣
⁣
- 𝘍𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘳 𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘴𝘦: when the follicles are developing to produce a mature egg. Oestrogen is (and is meant to be) dominant now⁣
⁣
- 𝘖𝘷𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯: the dominant follicle releases it’s egg. LH surge at ovulation is responsible for the release of the egg (and without this it is impossible to
conceive naturally)
⁣
- 𝘓𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘴𝘦: following ovulation, the corpus luteum forms which produces progesterone in preparation for pregnancy. This is time to test progesterone, 7 days post confirmed ovulation or 7 days prior to next expected period. It is ‘day 21’ in a 28 day cycle. ⁣

More often than not, when we actually look at what has been tested, there are blatant omissions. Things have been missed. Standard fertility tests have not been done⁣
⁣
Over the next 10 part series, I will share with you the basic level of essential bloods that I love to be done by your doctor or fertility specialist, with a couple of advanced extra tests too. ⁣
⁣
NB: day 1 of your cycle is first day of full flow bleed 🩸 ⁣

𝟷. 𝙁𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙘𝙡𝙚 𝙎𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙃𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙁𝙎𝙃 (𝙏𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙙𝙖𝙮 𝟸-𝟯)⁣
FSH stimulates the development of the ovarian follicles. High levels can lead to a reduced number and quality of eggs or indicate premature menopause. High FSH often presents with low oestrogen levels, which may be affecting the development of your eggs and uterine lining. Ideally, FSH should be < 6 at day 2-3 of your cycle. ⁣
⁣
𝟸. 𝙇𝙪𝙩𝙚𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙃𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙇𝙃 (𝙏𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙙𝙖𝙮 𝟸-𝟹)⁣
LH regulates the menstrual cycle by stimulating oestrogen and progesterone ovarian production and it triggers ovulation during mid cycle. High LH is often found in women with PCOS or it may indicate ovarian ageing, where the ovaries do not respond to normal LH levels.⁣
⁣
The ratio of FSH:LH is really important, and should be 2:1 (eg FSH 6, LH 3). If it is the other way around, or LH is 2-3 times higher than FSH (eg. LH 8 FSH 3),that may be diagnostic for PCOS⁣
⁣
𝟯. 𝙊𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙙𝙞𝙤𝙡 𝙀𝟮 (𝙏𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙙𝙖𝙮 𝟮-𝟯)⁣
Oestrogen is secreted by the ovarian follicles. It is in charge of the fertile quality of the cervical fluid, it stimulates egg maturation and prepares the uterus for implantation. Low E2 can lead to immature eggs or prevent eggs from implanting due to a thin endometrium. High E2 may indicate oestrogen dominance, fibroids or endometriosis, and comes with all manner of associated hormonal symptoms ⁣
