Here’s a little mini-version of plate school (for your little plate learners at home 👧👩🏫!)
For the mums 🤰:
〰️ base of leafy greens & low starchy coloured veg
〰️ 2/5 starchy veg of choice (sweet potato is a personal fave! 🍠) + 2/5 complete protein (🍳scrambled eggs is an easy win) + 1/5 fermented foods
〰️ top with mixed seeds and an olive oil based dressing
For the kids 🧒:
〰️ 1/4 protein + 1/4 carbs + 1/2 mixed coloured veg & fermented foods
For the toddlers 👶:
〰️ 1/4 protein + 1/4 carbs + 1/4 veg + 1/4 fermented foods
Bubs and kids tend to crave and lean more into higher fat and carbohydrate foods. This is because they are more energy dense and are better for long sessions of running and playing, particularly for growing brains that just want to feast on yummy glucose! 😋
Still, we always want to offer as much variety as often as possible to encourage trying or even looking, touching, squishing, playing with new foods! My kids might not always eat everything on their plate, and sometimes show genuine distain for zucchini and that’s sooooooooo normal.
As a mumma/nutritionist, it can particularly grind my gears. But I (try) to keep telling myself I’m playing the long game 🤦♀️😂
