Your pelvic floor exercises matter. So does what happens when you stand up, lift your child or carry the shopping. 💜

For women living with pelvic organ prolapse, these everyday demands don’t stop while they work on their rehabilitation.

As a pelvic health physio, I believe we need to keep asking: how can we better prepare women for the activities that matter to them?

Learning to correctly contract and fully relax the pelvic floor muscles is an important foundation.

From there, my Pelvic Floor Pathway progresses towards coordination with breathing and movement, then into everyday tasks such as bending, lifting and carrying.

I call this Functional Pelvic Floor Muscle Training.

The aim is adaptable control: being able to respond to changing demands, without constantly gripping or holding your breath.

This approach deserves further research to establish what additional benefits it may offer women with bothersome prolapse symptoms.

Women deserve rehabilitation that considers their symptoms, their goals and the lives they are already living.

💜 A prolapse diagnosis can leave you wondering: “Can I still exercise? Lift my children? Do the things I love?”

Your body is not broken. You deserve support to understand your symptoms and find a way forward.

Pelvic organ prolapse symptoms can improve. Care should consider what matters to you—whether that is walking comfortably, carrying your shopping or returning to exercise.

Learning to correctly contract and relax your pelvic floor muscles is an important starting point. Rehabilitation can also help you explore how to use those muscles during everyday movement.

In my video, “Pelvic organ prolapse can improve”, I explain my step-by-step approach.

PELVIC ORGAN PROLAPSE: Can We Do Better?

💜 Your pelvic floor exercises need to connect with the life you live.

If you have pelvic organ prolapse, you still need to carry shopping, lift children, stand to cook and move through your day.

Learning to correctly contract and relax your pelvic floor muscles is an important beginning.

But how do we help women build on that foundation—into bending, lifting, carrying and the exercise they enjoy?

In my article, “Pelvic organ prolapse: can we do better?”, I reflect on a recent international research discussion about improving conservative and surgical care.

I explore why Functional Pelvic Floor Muscle Training deserves further research, including whether progressing strength into coordinated everyday movement can help women with bothersome prolapse symptoms.

Women deserve practical support, informed choices and research that reflects their daily lives.

But a prolapse diagnosis doesn't mean you have to give up the activities you love.

There are evidence-based ways to manage symptoms, including pelvic floor muscle training.

As a Pelvic Health Physio with over 35 years of experience, I want women to know that support and education are available.

💜 Women deserve to be heard, supported and treated with dignity.

Thank you, Jacqui Lambie, for speaking openly about your experience of prolapse. Sharing something so personal in public takes courage.

As a pelvic health physio with more than 35 years of clinical experience, I have sat with many women who felt frightened, upset or embarrassed after being diagnosed with pelvic organ prolapse.

Some worried about what it meant for their bodies, their relationships and the activities they loved. Others had kept their symptoms to themselves for years.

When a woman’s health experience is met with ridicule, the impact can reach far beyond her. Another woman watching may decide to stay silent.

We need to make it easier for women to speak up and seek help.

Va**na is an anatomical word. Prolapse is a health condition. Neither is a reason for shame.

I welcome Jacqui’s efforts to bring this conversation into the open and raise funds for women’s health research through her “Va**na Collection”.

We need continued research, clear education and access to pelvic health care. An area I particularly want to see explored further is functional pelvic floor muscle training—how we help women use their pelvic floor muscles during everyday movement, exercise and the activities that matter to them.

To any woman living with prolapse: you have nothing to be ashamed of. Your concerns deserve to be taken seriously, and you deserve support.

Let’s replace silence and shame with understanding, respect and care. 💜

PELVIC ORGAN PROLAPSE CAN IMPROVE! 💜

🌸 Do you feel va**nal heaviness or a dragging sensation?

🌸 Have you noticed a va**nal bulge?

🌸 Do your symptoms become worse after standing or walking for long periods?

These can be symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse.

And for many women, these symptoms can feel worrying or even frightening.

But I want you to know something important.

But your pelvic floor muscles don’t work alone!

They work together with your breathing, posture, abdominal muscles and everyday movements.

That’s why I teach Functional Pelvic Floor Muscle Training.

Through my Six-Step Pelvic Floor Pathway, women learn to:

💜 Find and correctly contract their pelvic floor muscles.

💪 Progressively strengthen them.

🌸 Coordinate their muscles with breathing and movement.

🚶 Bring pelvic floor muscle training into everyday activities.

After more than 35 years of clinical experience as a physiotherapist, I’m passionate about helping women understand their pelvic health and regain confidence in their bodies.

Doing your Kegels—but wondering if you’re doing them correctly? 💜

It can be hard to know what you should feel, especially when the advice is simply “squeeze”.

Before building strength, start by finding and feeling your pelvic floor muscles.

Look for:
💜 A gentle closing and lift
💜 Comfortable breathing
💜 Your pelvic floor muscles fully relaxing between contractions, without pushing down

In my latest video, “Kegels Done Well”, I guide you through these first steps and explain how to move towards strengthening.

Take a few minutes to watch and learn at your own pace.

If you still feel unsure about the movement, a pelvic health physiotherapist can help assess your technique.

Which part feels harder to recognise—the lift or the relaxation?

Did you know your pelvic floor muscles help support your bladder, uterus and bowel every time you cough, sneeze, laugh, lift or exercise?

I often explain this using a simple analogy:

⛵ Imagine your pelvic organs are a boat.

💧 Your pelvic floor muscles are the water supporting that boat.

When the water level is high, the boat is well supported.

When the water level drops, the boat sits lower and places more strain on the structures supporting it.

This is why learning how to correctly activate and train your pelvic floor muscles is so important throughout pregnancy, postpartum and menopause.

Strong, reactive pelvic floor muscles help support your body during everyday life.

✨ Understanding your body is the first step toward improving pelvic health.
