If youโre taking a GLP 1 medication, should you still exercise?
Absolutely. But the goal isnโt simply to make the number on the scales smaller.
Research shows GLP 1 based treatments can produce substantial weight loss, with most coming from fat, but some lean mass can also be lost. Recent research suggests lean mass may account for roughly 25 to 35% of weight lost with some incretin based treatments. (PubMed)
An important distinction: lean mass is not the same as skeletal muscle. It also includes other tissues and body water, so we shouldnโt automatically assume every kilogram of lean mass lost means a kilogram of muscle lost. (PubMed)
What we do know is that preserving muscle and physical function matters.
Thatโs why resistance training deserves a major place in the conversation.
๐๏ธ Weights
๐ช Resistance bands
๐ช Machines
๐ Bodyweight exercises
๐ถ Functional strength exercises
The aim is to challenge your muscles and maintain strength.
Cardio still matters too โค๏ธ
Walking, cycling, swimming or anything you enjoy can support cardiovascular fitness and overall health.
And nutrition matters. When appetite is reduced, it can become harder to eat enough protein and nutrition. Recent reviews and expert consensus support paying attention to protein intake and nutritional adequacy with resistance exercise. (PubMed)
So instead of only asking:
โHow much weight have I lost?โ
Letโs also ask:
๐ช Am I maintaining my strength?
๐ Am I improving my fitness?
๐ฅ Am I getting enough nutrition?
โค๏ธ What can my body do now?
GLP 1 medication can be one part of the picture.
Exercise is another.
The goal isnโt simply to become a smaller version of yourself.
Itโs to support a healthier, stronger and more capable body while you work towards your goals. ๐
If youโre using a GLP 1 medication and want help building an exercise program around your goals, an Exercise Physiologist can help you work out where to start and how to progress safely.
