My NDIS provider shut down. What do I do this week? Three steps.

1. Call the NDIA on 1800 800 110. Tell them which supports you need right now, and any new provider you have in mind.
2. Have your plan ready, and know which supports can't wait.
3. Make sure your needs are met today. If anyone is in danger, call 000.

Before you choose a new provider, check they're registered. It takes about two minutes on the NDIS Commission's Provider Register.

You don't have to sort everything out at once. If you'd like us to help, call 0437 733 744 and we'll talk it through.

"Will the same person come every single week?"

That was the first question a young mum asked us. Both of her children are autistic, and it takes time for them to bond with a carer. In her family, a new face every week would mean starting again every time.

HOW KINSHIP MATCHES A SUPPORT WORKER
1. We visit you first. We learn about your routine, what you want and what you don't want.
2. We ask about your preferences. Some families ask for someone who shares their culture or speaks their language. Then we match you with one of our team, and you meet your support worker before support starts.
3. We also arrange a backup support worker, and you approve them too.

Kinship's practice is the same support worker, every visit.

Is your NDIS provider registered? You can check it yourself in about two minutes.

Go to the NDIS Commission's Provider Register ("Find a registered provider")
Search your provider's business name, legal name or ABN
Look at the status. Approved means they're registered. Revoked means their registration has been cancelled.
One thing that trips people up: you can't search the register by registration number. Use the name or the ABN.

Already with a provider? Check again. Registration can be suspended or revoked, so a check from last year doesn't cover today.

If something on the register doesn't look right, give us a call on 0437 733 744.

"Disabled Australians are paying the price for the failures of this government." πŸ’™
A senator said that out loud, in Parliament, this week.

Senator Maria Kovacic spoke about the NDIS Bill hearings. About the evidence given by people with disability, families and advocates.

She said she challenges anyone who sat through those hearings not to be affected by what they heard.

We are not afraid of this Bill because we misunderstand it.

We are afraid because we understand it completely.

Watch the clip.

Then share it. πŸ’™

In 1982, Mark Inglis was a mountain rescue guide in New Zealand.

He got trapped in a snow cave on Mount Cook during a blizzard. Thirteen days.

When rescue came, both legs had to be amputated below the knee.
He was 22.
Twenty-four years later, on 15 May 2006, he became the first double amputee in history to stand on the summit of Mount Everest. πŸ’™

On prosthetic legs. One of which snapped in half during the climb and was repaired with duct tape until a spare could be carried up from base camp.

He had never climbed the Himalayas when he had legs. He said he always meant to.

He just never had time.

After Everest, he said something that I keep coming back to.

"My next Everest is changing people's perceptions of disability. People with a disability don't know how much more they can do. They are often constrained by people giving them poorly informed advice."

We see this in our work every week. Families who have been told what their family member cannot do. Participants who have been given a ceiling and told to manage their expectations.

Mark Inglis fixed a broken leg with duct tape and kept going.

That is not a metaphor. That is what happened.

What has your family been told is not possible? πŸ’™

"He fixed his prosthetic leg with duct tape at 6,400 metres and kept climbing."

In 2006 he climbed Everest.

On prosthetic legs.

One snapped in half partway up. He fixed it with duct tape and kept going.

He became the first double amputee in history to reach the summit.

He said he had never climbed the Himalayas when he had legs. He always meant to. He just never had time.

His next goal after Everest: changing what people believe is possible with disability.

The government has called this a 50% cut to NDIS funding. πŸ’™

But at the Senate hearing where this was being examined, officials confirmed something the public hasn't heard enough about.

The legislation itself does not cap the reduction at 50%.

It allows the Minister to cut Social and Community Participation funding by up to 99.99% β€” almost the entire amount β€” if it's deemed necessary for financial sustainability.

50% is what's being said.

99.99% is what's actually written into the Bill.

This is the kind of detail that gets lost in a headline but matters enormously to the families relying on this funding every day.

He thought he'd never find love. πŸ’™

Nick Vujicic said he had real doubts he'd ever meet anyone who would choose to spend their life with him. He called himself "Prince Charming with a couple bits and pieces missing."

Then he met Kanae.

She said she'd been going for the physical and she was done with it. The moment she met Nick, she found everything she was actually looking for.

He wasn't a compromise.
He was the one.

πŸ’¬ My observation: Something I notice quietly in conversations with participants - especially younger ones - is a private belief that love, belonging, and relationships are for other people.

Not for them.
Not with everything their disability brings.
Nick believed that too.
For years.
And then someone looked at him and said - you are exactly what I was looking for.

That's not a fairy tale. That's what happens when you keep showing up as yourself. πŸ’™

This clip explains something most people don't realise about how NDIS funding actually works day to day. πŸ’™

An official told a Senate hearing that employment supports would not be affected by a proposed 50% cut to Social and Community Participation funding.

Senator Jordon Steele-John asked one simple follow-up question that changed everything.

If someone takes a maxi taxi to a job interview β€” that's transport funding, untouched. But who pays for the support worker who helps them out of the taxi and into the building?

Turns out: that comes from the general pool of Social and Community Participation funding. Not the protected "employment" category β€” because technically, the person doesn't have the job yet.

Which means that exact support β€” the support that gets someone through the door to the interview β€” is the part that gets cut.

As Dr George Taleporos put it, life does not fit neatly into funding categories.
This is not abstract policy. This is whether someone gets the chance to walk into an interview room at all.

We are a registered NDIS provider and we see how flexibly funding gets used every single week β€” because real life genuinely doesn't sit in tidy boxes. πŸ’™
