Mechanisms of Strength Part 4: Muscle Hypertrophy.

I did a deep dive into skeletal muscle hypertrophy and it was way more in-depth than I initially thought or remembered from my days at uni...

Muscles are in a constant state of hypertrophy (muscle building) or atrophy (muscle breakdown) there is no middle ground. When muscle hypertrophy exceeds atrophy, we achieve a net positive balance allowing for muscle growth - simply put, muscle protein synthesis (MPS) must be greater than muscle protein breakdown (MPB).

Mechanical tension (aka loading) in the form of resistance training taken close to task-failure, causes an involuntary slowling of contraction velocities and the recruitment of high-threshold motor units. These factors stimulate MPS via mechanotransduction pathways which signal rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) to induce myofribillar hypertrophy (myofribillar addition in parallel).

I'm still learning more about muscle hypertrophy and the proposed physiological mechanisms even all these years later. This stuff will never become boring to me! 🤓

Would love to get in touch or chat with anyone who's interested in learning more about hypertrophy 💪

The first 150-minutes of exercise per week produces the greatest health benefits! ❤️

This can look like ~22 minutes per day or 30-minutes five days a week. Doing more than that still produces health benefits but there's a point of diminishing returns (less bang for your buck).

Start small and work you way up. Exercise is like compound interest; put in a little effort now and reap the rewards later! 💰

The guidelines recommend 150-300 of moderate intensity cardiovascular exercise per week. What does this look like? Watch the video to find out!

Are you meeting the weekly recommended amount? 🤔
