Bladder and bowel leakage is common, and it is not something to be embarrassed about — but it goes unmentioned for years, and the shower gets avoided in the meantime.

Six aids help most people: a shower chair or stool, grab rails with a hand-held shower, non-slip flooring, a raised toilet seat or over-toilet frame, a bidet seat, and continence products with a bedside commode.

Most are low-cost items an occupational therapist or continence nurse can recommend. The National Continence Helpline is free on 1800 33 00 66.

Muddled medication. A wound that isn't healing. An empty fridge. Avoiding the shower.

Most families notice several small things before they name the big one. Individually each is easy to explain away — together they're a pattern worth acting on.

We've written up 14 signs, and who to call first for each. For anything medical, start with the GP. For care at home, My Aged Care on 1800 200 422. And if you're the carer and you're exhausted, that counts as one of the signs too.

There are five ways a nurse can end up at your door in Victoria — and they differ enormously in cost and waiting time.

NDIS funding from your Core budget. The Support at Home clinical care category, which carries no participant contribution. CHSP, now continuing to at least 30 June 2029. Privately paid nursing, with no assessment and no waiting list. Or the health system itself after a hospital stay.

Our guide compares who pays, what it costs, and how fast each one can actually start.

A community nurse is coming to your home. What should you have ready?

Your medication list — including anything you buy over the counter and any supplements. Current dressings or supplies. Your hospital discharge summary or GP letters. And a list of your questions, because they're easy to forget on the day.

Clear a well-lit space with somewhere to wash hands, and pop the dog in another room. The first visit is an assessment that sets your care plan, so it usually takes longer than the ones after it.

Most family carers who hurt their back do it during something completely ordinary — bed to chair, chair to toilet — because they lifted when they should have assisted.

A physio or OT can come to your home and show you how to do those transfers properly, with the equipment that takes the weight out of it. Under the NDIS, that training for carers is funded.

What the training covers, and when it's time to ask for it: https://sesi.com.au/blog/training-family-carers-in-safe-manual-handling-for-home-transfers/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=blog-sprint-2026

Your physio wrote you a program. It's on the fridge. You've done it twice.

That's not a motivation problem — it's usually that the routine was never built into the day. Attach it to something you already do, set the space up so it's safe, and it stops being a chore you have to remember.

How to turn a physio's plan into a weekly routine, and the signs that mean stop and make a call: https://sesi.com.au/blog/building-a-safe-home-exercise-routine-from-your-physios-plan/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=blog-sprint-2026

Not every therapy appointment needs someone standing in your lounge room.

A telehealth check-in works well for reviewing exercises, sorting out equipment that isn't working, coaching a family carer, or talking through a report — and the NDIS funds it at the same hourly price as an in-person session.

It's not right for everything, though. Here's what telehealth suits, what it doesn't, and how to set it up so it's genuinely useful: https://sesi.com.au/blog/telehealth-check-ins-with-your-ot-or-physio-under-ndis-rules/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=blog-sprint-2026

Physio at home isn't just more convenient than getting to a clinic.

Practising on your own front steps, in your own bathroom, getting out of your own chair — that's what makes the improvement stick, because it's the exact thing you need to be able to do on Tuesday morning.

Ten reasons in-home physiotherapy works well for older adults, and how it's funded whether you're on the NDIS or Support at Home: https://sesi.com.au/blog/benefits-of-in-home-physiotherapy-for-older-adults/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=blog-sprint-2026

Cooking is one of the first things people give up when their hands or their balance change. It's also one of the easiest to get back.

A rocker knife you can use one-handed. A board with spikes that holds the onion for you. A kettle tipper so you're not lifting boiling water. A jar opener that doesn't need grip.

Ten adaptive kitchen tools, the challenge each one solves, and how the NDIS funds them: https://sesi.com.au/blog/10-adaptive-kitchen-tools-for-independent-meal-preparation/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=blog-sprint-2026

In regional Victoria, transport is usually the real barrier — not the activity.

There's no single answer. Most people use a mix: NDIS Core Transport funding paid to you, a support worker's time to drive you as part of a community access shift, public transport where it runs, and the Multi Purpose Taxi Program for half-price fares.

Our guide sets out what each one covers and how they fit together, so you're not left piecing it together alone.
