Blood sugar balance becomes especially important during perimenopause, as hormonal changes can increase insulin resistance and energy fluctuations.

Certain supplements may help:
🩷 cinnamon and chromium can improve insulin sensitivity, while myo-inositol supports ovulatory function and glucose control.
ā¤ļø Gymnema is traditionally used to reduce sugar cravings, and berberine has strong evidence for lowering blood sugar and improving metabolic health.
🧔 Magnesium is essential for glucose regulation, alpha-lipoic acid provides antioxidant support and improves insulin sensitivity, and green tea offers both metabolic and anti-inflammatory benefits.

These supplements can be valuable tools when combined with nutrition, exercise, and stress management.

During perimenopause, it’s common for cholesterol levels to rise, even if your diet and lifestyle haven’t changed. This is largely due to the natural decline in oestrogen, which plays a protective role in lipid metabolism. Oestrogen helps maintain healthy levels of HDL (good cholesterol) and keeps LDL (bad cholesterol) in check. As oestrogen drops, LDL often increases while HDL may decrease, leading to less favourable cholesterol ratios.

At the same time, changes in insulin sensitivity, thyroid function, body composition, and stress levels can further influence lipid levels.

If you are concerned about your cholesterol, it’s important to work with a health practitioner for targeted support.

Cholesterol changes are common in perimenopause, but diet and lifestyle make a big difference.

Here are my top tips:
🌿 Increase soluble fibre (oats, beans, flax)
šŸ· Reduce alcohol & added sugars
šŸ‡ Increase antioxidant & polyphenol-rich foods
🐟 Increase unsaturated fats (oily fish, extra-virgin olive oil)
šŸƒšŸ» Prioritise daily movement and stress management
šŸ› Increase plant proteins (beans, lentils, soy, chickpeas)

If you’re still struggling with your cholesterol after making these changes, then you likely need more personalised and targeted support with the help of a practitioner.

Metabolic shifts are common in perimenopause, but simple daily habits can help protect long-term health.

🩷 Prioritise protein and fibre at every meal to stabilise blood sugar and keep you satiated. ā¤ļø Limit refined sugar and unhealthy fats, and focus on wholefood sources instead.
🧔Combine strength training 2–3 times per week with a daily walk to preserve muscle and improve insulin sensitivity.
šŸ’™ Finally, manage stress and aim for 7–9 hours of quality sleep. Both are essential for hormone balance and metabolic resilience.

Small, consistent changes go a long way in supporting energy, weight, and overall wellbeing.

During perimenopause, fat distribution often shifts from hips and thighs to the abdomen.

This central fat is more metabolically active, meaning it releases inflammatory signals and increases cardiovascular risk. Oestrogen decline and rising cortisol both drive this change.

Rather than focusing only on calories, the key is supporting hormonal balance through nutrient-dense meals, managing stress, cardio & strength training, and quality sleep. These strategies reduce abdominal fat not just for appearance, but for long-term metabolic and heart health.
