Many parents and carers tell us the same thing:
"My child wants to work, but they don't know what job they want or where to begin."

The good news is that this is completely normal.

Not knowing exactly what career path to follow doesn't mean someone isn't ready to start exploring employment. In fact, the first step is often understanding strengths, interests and goals rather than choosing a specific job title.

Some helpful questions to start with include:
✅ What activities do they enjoy?
✅ What skills come naturally to them?
✅ What kind of work environment suits them best?
✅ What are they interested in learning more about?
✅ What would meaningful employment look like for them?

Every employment journey is different. Some people know exactly what they want to do, while others discover new opportunities as they build skills, confidence and experience.

Inclusive Employment Australia, delivered by ProActiv People in partnership with Autism SA, provides autism-specific employment support to help autistic adults explore their strengths, prepare for work, connect with employers and access ongoing support throughout their employment journey.

Last week, the ProActiv People attended the Local Link Disability Expo alongside Autism SA , connecting with community members, families and service providers.

The events provided a valuable opportunity to connect with members of the autism community, families, carers and other community members, sharing information about employment supports through Inclusive Employment Australia and pathways to meaningful work.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to chat with our team. We look forward to continuing these conversations and supporting more people on their employment journey.

What NDIS Changes Mean for Your Child's Employment Goals — and What Hasn't Changed?
With recent NDIS changes, many parents and carers are asking what this means for their child's future employment goals.

While systems and funding arrangements may evolve, one thing hasn't changed: many autistic young adults want opportunities to build skills, gain confidence and work towards meaningful employment that aligns with their strengths and interests.

What remains important is:
✅ Focusing on your child's strengths and interests
✅ Building confidence and independence over time
✅ Exploring employment pathways that suit their goals
✅ Accessing personalised support when needed
✅ Recognising that every employment journey looks different

There is no single path into employment. Some people move directly from school into work, while others build skills through training, volunteering, community activities or employment support before finding the right opportunity.

Inclusive Employment Australia, delivered by ProActiv People in partnership with Autism SA, provides autism-specific employment support designed to help autistic adults prepare for work, identify their strengths, connect with suitable opportunities and receive ongoing support throughout their employment journey.

My Child Doesn't Have Work Experience: Can They Still Get a Job?
It's a question many parents and carers ask when supporting a young person into employment.

The short answer is: Yes.

While work experience can be helpful, many employers are also looking for qualities such as reliability, a willingness to learn, problem-solving skills and a positive attitude. Everyone starts somewhere, and many people gain their first workplace skills through study, volunteering, hobbies, community activities or everyday life experiences.

Parents and carers can play an important role by helping young people identify their strengths, interests and goals, rather than focusing only on what they haven't done yet.

✅ What are they interested in?
✅ What skills come naturally to them?
✅ What environments help them do their best work?
✅ What goals would they like to work towards?

Focusing on strengths can help open up employment pathways that may not have been considered before. A meaningful job match isn't just about previous experience. It's about finding opportunities that align with an individual's skills, interests and potential.

Inclusive Employment Australia, delivered by ProActiv People in partnership with Autism SA, provides autism-specific employment support to help autistic adults build confidence, prepare for work, connect with inclusive employers and access ongoing support throughout their employment journey.

Confidence plays a big role in the journey towards employment, and parents and carers can have an important part to play along the way.

Supporting a young person doesn't mean having all the answers. Often, it's about helping them recognise their strengths, explore their interests and build confidence in their own abilities. Families can help by:

✅ Encouraging conversations about strengths and future goals
✅ Celebrating progress and achievements, no matter how small
✅ Supporting opportunities to learn new skills
✅ Exploring different employment pathways together
✅ Encouraging independence and self-advocacy
✅ Connecting with autism-informed employment supports

Every employment journey looks different. Some young people know exactly what they want to do, while others are still working out what meaningful employment might look like for them. Building confidence starts with focusing on strengths and interests, rather than limitations.

Inclusive Employment Australia, delivered by ProActiv People in partnership with Autism SA, provides autism-specific employment support that helps autistic adults identify their strengths, prepare for work, connect with inclusive employers and access ongoing support throughout their employment journey.

When people think about employment, they often focus on job titles.
But finding the right role is about more than choosing a particular job. It's about understanding your strengths, interests and the type of work environment where you can thrive.

✅ What are you good at?
✅ What tasks do you enjoy?
✅ What skills come naturally to you?
✅ What kind of workplace feels comfortable and supportive?

The answers to these questions can help identify employment pathways that are a good fit, even if they don't match the career options you first had in mind.

Inclusive Employment Australia, delivered by ProActiv People in partnership with Autism SA, takes a strengths-based approach to employment support. Rather than focusing only on finding a job, the program helps autistic adults explore their strengths, build confidence, develop employment goals and connect with suitable opportunities.

Everyone's employment journey is different. By focusing on strengths first, it's possible to find opportunities that are meaningful, sustainable and aligned with individual goals.

Finding a job is important—but finding the right job is what supports long-term success.
Through Inclusive Employment Australia (IEA) delivered by Proactiv People, the focus isn’t just on placement. It’s about matching people with roles that align with their strengths, interests and goals.

So what does the “right job” actually mean in practice?
✅ A role that fits individual strengths
Every person has unique skills and ways of working.
The right job builds on those strengths—supporting confidence, performance and long-term growth.

✅ A supportive work environment
The workplace itself plays a big role in success.
This may include:
✔️Clear communication
✔️Structured expectations
✔️Practical adjustments where needed

Inclusive environments help people do their best work over time.
✅ A pace that works for the individual
Not everyone follows the same pathway.
IEA takes a personalised approach—supporting people at a pace that suits their goals and circumstances.

✅ Ongoing support, not just placement
The “right job” is one that lasts.
Support continues beyond starting work, helping people:
✔️Settle into their role
✔️Build skills and confidence
✔️Maintain and grow in employment over time

The idea of the “right job” goes beyond simply being hired—it means finding meaningful work where someone feels supported, can contribute, and build a sustainable career.
