CPD doesnโ€™t always have to mean fluorescent lights, a conference room and trying very hard not to look at the clock.

Sometimes it looks a little more like thisโ€ฆ

White beaches. Orange lichen-covered rocks. Coastal bush. A pack on your back. And a patient who absolutely did not read the scenario notes before you arrived.

Our Wilderness Rescue Medicine course in the Bay of Fires brings medical professionals into the environment weโ€™re actually talking about.
Because managing a patient remotely is a very different game when thereโ€™s no hospital around the corner, no endless supply cupboard and no extra pair of hands appearing because you pressed a button.

Itโ€™s practical. Itโ€™s hands-on. Itโ€™s proper CPD.

And, thankfully, thereโ€™s a pretty good view while youโ€™re doing it.
Weโ€™ll take that kind of classroom any day.

Today we saw our GOODEM Spring Seminar pre-conference workshop kick off in Queenstown, New Zealand ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฟ and what a way to start!

Nothing quite like a healthy dose of wilderness medicine to get the day going, surrounded by some seriously spectacular scenery. And because this is Queenstown, the adventure didnโ€™t stop thereโ€ฆ a boat ride out to Kinloch and a helicopter back!

A pretty hard commute to beat - and a brilliant start to the seminar.

When you're hours from the nearest road or definitive care, improvisation can make all the difference.

In this video, we demonstrate how to construct a rope litter stretcher using minimal equipment-an invaluable wilderness skill when a patient needs to be moved safely through remote terrain.

The further you are from help, the more important preparation, teamwork, and practical skills become.

๐ŸŒฟQuick & Easy Wilderness Tips with Kerryn!

Here's a simple tip that can make a huge difference in the bush-stay as dry as possible.

When it's cold and wet outdoors, keeping your layers dry is one of the easiest ways to stay warm and comfortable for longer.

A common mistake - Often occurs stopping for morning tea or lunch. As soon as you stop moving, your body starts to cool down. Most of us remember to throw on an extra layer-but then we sit straight on cold, damp ground, soaking those nice dry layers and allowing the ground to draw heat away from our bodies.

Remember, heat isn't just lost to the air-we lose plenty through the ground too.

A quick fix? Sit on your backpack instead. Even better, carry a lightweight sit mat if you have one. That simple insulating layer between you and the ground helps keep your clothes drier and your body warmer.

It's a small habit that takes seconds, but it can make a big difference to your comfort-and the more comfortable you are, the more you can enjoy your time in the bush.
