NERVOUS SYSTEM REGULATION
4 week “Mindful Yin” Yoga Series

THE AIM

To better understand the signals shaping how we feel & move, & build practical tools for greater nervous system regulation, recovery & resilience.

IS THIS FOR YOU?

Your nervous system is involved in every action you take - how you move, breathe, respond to stress & recover.

Learning how to better regulate it is a powerful skill, both on & off the mat.

You’re strength training. Working on mobility.
Trying to improve your balance, focus & recovery.

So why do you still feel tight, tired & stuck?

Your brain & nervous system are involved in every change you’re trying to make. A useful way to understand their priorities:

1️⃣ SURVIVAL: Is this safe enough?
Your brain can detect a change before your conscious mind can explain it.

2️⃣ EFFICIENCY: What’s the most reliable way through?
A familiar strategy can feel dependable, even when it limits your movement.

3️⃣ PERFORMANCE: What capacity can I access now?
Strength, mobility & focus depend partly on how your system is responding today.

Your brain makes sense of signals from your vision (beyond eyesight), balance system, sense of where your body is in space & sensations from inside your body. Stress, sleep & fuel also shape what you have available.

When those signals are unclear, conflicting or hard to process

🤸🏼‍♂️ MOVING ALONE CAN TAKE MORE EFFORT.

You can keep pushing.
Stretch a little longer.

🚨But it’s difficult to build external progress
when there’s internal chaos.

Regulation isn’t staying calm.
It’s having the range to meet a challenge, adapt & recover afterwards.

Your nervous system is involved in everything you do, from movement to rest & recovery.

Give it the attention you give your training.

That’s how your hard work has a better chance to land.

Up next: four brain areas involved & the patterns you might recognise in yourself.

THE ART OF REGULATION

Regulation is the ability to recognise your current state, respond to what the moment requires, & turn the stress response down once the demand has passed.

In a world that keeps us constantly “on,” Mindful Yin gives us space to notice our responses - & practice more adaptable ones.

Because regulation requires more than knowing what helps.

We must learn to:

Recognise the state our unique nervous system is in.

Understand what your nervous system needs in that moment - not simply reach for what feels comfortable or familiar.

Practise effective tools often enough that they become available when they actually matter - in real life.

Your nervous system needs more than one way to respond.

Yoga asks us to develop mastery of the mind, the senses & our relationship with the physical body.

To navigate slightly more complex movement, you have to feel before you move.

Where is my weight?
Where does it need to go?
What needs to engage?
What can soften?
How much effort is actually required?

You’re sensing. Processing. Responding. Adapting.

And the mind is practising too.

Focus. Fear. Hesitation. Effort. Ego.

Can you notice what arises without being controlled by it?

This is abhyāsa : dedicated practice.

Again & again, refining awareness, strength, coordination & control until something that once required enormous effort becomes more organised & available.

The pose is simply what you can see.

The awareness.
The discipline.
The self-study.
The practice.

That’s where the yoga lives.
