Around 4 in 10 adults with chronic pain also live with clinically significant depression (JAMA Network Open, 2025).

Ongoing pain wears down sleep and mood, and depression and PTSD change how the nervous system processes pain. Treating one without the other can hold back progress on both.

Anodyne's care is led by Dr. Vincenzo Mondello, who is qualified in both psychiatry and pain medicine. If you live with both, ask your GP whether a specialist referral makes sense.

Support is available 24/7: Lifeline 13 11 14 or Beyond Blue 1300 22 4636.

Today is World Mental Health Day, and this year's theme is "Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change."

Awareness has grown faster than access. Fewer than half of Australians with a mental disorder in the past year saw a health professional about it (ABS). For people whose treatment hasn't worked, specialist care is harder again to find and fund.

That's the gap Anodyne works to close, including fully funded treatment for eligible veterans through DVA.

Support is available 24/7: Lifeline 13 11 14 or Beyond Blue 1300 22 4636.

When is it time to refer a patient beyond first-line care?

Treatment resistance usually builds slowly, one small medication change at a time. The slides cover four signs worth noting at review, including two or more adequate antidepressant trials without enough response.
You remain the treating doctor, and we report outcomes back to you after assessment.

Mental Health Month is about asking for help. For some people, asking is the easy part.

Around 1 in 3 people with depression don't get enough relief from standard antidepressants, even after trying more than one. This is treatment-resistant depression, a term for how the condition has responded to treatment so far. Anodyne's specialist clinics treat this group.

If that sounds familiar, ask your GP or psychiatrist about a referral.

A stellate ganglion block is one of the more researched treatments in this space.
The published data covers onset and effect duration, often within the hour for onset and 4 to 12 months of relief from a single procedure.

Anyone who's started an antidepressant knows the wait. SSRIs take weeks to adjust serotonin gradually.

A different treatment works through glutamate and the NMDA receptor instead, prompting a rapid shift in circuit function. That's why relief can land in hours, not weeks.

That speed matters most for someone in acute distress, when the person and the moment call for something faster than a slow chemical build-up allows.

PTSD isn't one story. Combat trauma grows from acute, high-threat events. Operational stress builds slowly across a career, with no single moment to point to. Military sexual trauma carries a breach of trust within the institution meant to keep someone safe.

Same diagnosis, different weight. Treating it well starts with recognising which. Anodyne treats PTSD across the veteran and serving community, fully funded for eligible DVA and ADF patients.

R U OK? Day works because the question is easy to ask. The hard part is what comes after someone says no.

Stay with them. Listen. Ask how long it's felt this way, not just how they are today.

If the usual supports haven't shifted things, the options don't end there. Asking is the start. Knowing where to point them next is what helps.

Try an antidepressant. Adjust the dose. Try another. For many people, that works.

Interventional psychiatry is what comes next for the people it doesn't reach: treatment that acts on the brain and nervous system directly, not a daily tablet.

Anodyne's care is led by a clinician dual-qualified in pain medicine and psychiatry, one of very few in Australia to hold both.

Not working doesn't mean out of options. It means the next one works differently.
