Dr Kyla- Paediatric Dietitian Dr Kyla Smith is a paediatric dietitian revolutionising the way we feed our families Food and mealtimes are overwhelming for so many families.

I’m here to help you feel good about mealtimes, and change the way we feed this generation of children. There’s the process of starting off on solid food, surviving the fussy toddler stages and navigating school lunchboxes and family mealtimes, all whilst battling a myriad of misinformation and our own learned and sometimes negative relationships with food. My mission is to empower you with the skills and confidence to support your baby, your toddler and your school-aged child to love their food and feel comfortable in their bodies. We can raise our children to respect their bodies and trust their hunger, and feel confident around food. It’s not always easy in our diet-obsessed culture, but it is possible. My approach will set your kids up for a future of eating that supports them to grow and thrive. I can't wait for you to join me!

The bit that really stands out to me is the part about giving it some time and attention but keeping its place as only one part of your life.

So what is normal eating to you? Or what do you want it to be for your child?

This brilliant quote is from Ellyn Satter, from the Ellyn Satter Institute 🤩

This week we go beyond the crunch of these crackers to see what’s inside. Are they a grainy go-to or have we fallen for seed-y marketing?

🎙️ New podcast episode 🎙️

I’ve read some absolute rubbish recently about feeding kids with ADHD, so I invited Belinda Martin from Advanced Dietitians Group onto the podcast to talk through some of the myths floating around.

This one was promoted in an article recently saying “Many children with ADHD are zinc-deficient, which can make healthy, whole foods taste metallic, bitter, or completely flavourless. When the world tastes bland, kids reach for “sensory hits” like salty chips or sugary treats because they are the only things that register on their dulled palates.” 🤯🤯🤯❌❌❌

You read that and think… eeek that could absolutely be us!

But zinc supplements come with risk. And they’re only ever used if indicated and for a short period of time.

Bel talks all about this and more, on the latest episode of Mealtimes with Dr Kyla: Feeding Kids with ADHD.

This week I'm reviewing Natural Stock Co. Chicken Stock Concentrate. Let's see if this stock concentrate is stock-standard or if we should all be stocking up.

If your child’s blood test has indicated iron deficiency, then they need to take a therapeutic iron supplement.

Low ferritin can only be treated with medication- it doesn’t matter if they start eating steak tomorrow.

But almost all of the kids we see in our appointments are on a dose that isn’t suitable for them 😱

Here are some of the recent reasons clients were on the wrong dose:
They’ve grown since the iron was prescribed
They were told the wrong dose initially
The volume is too tricky to get in
They’re refusing to take the supplement
They weren’t “deficient enough”

This isn’t something that anyone should expect parents to work out. But it’s worth getting a second opinion if you’re not confident in your child’s treatment plan.

Nailing a plan for managing low iron is one of our favourite consult topics.

You can find out more about a consult with a Mealtimes team member here: https://mealtimes.com.au/product/consult/

A 30-minute appointment is perfect for reviewing iron supplement dosage and answering your questions.
A 60-minute appointment is better suited for a more comprehensive plan for managing iron in the long term.

My team and I would love to help you!

“Everyday” and “sometimes” food labels feel more child friendly than calling something good or bad, but are we accidentally just confusing our kids? 🤔 I think we are.

In fact, I don’t think there’s any kind of food label that actually helps kids eat “better”.

So consider this your invitation to stop trying to find the right words, and instead just call foods by their name. You can teach your kids what balanced eating looks like by modelling balanced eating. They learn best from what you do regularly at home, not what you say.

Big thanks to my friends at The Embrace Collective | Formerly for always promoting positive and affirming food and nutrition messages for children and parents- I’m proud to be celebrating National Nutrition Week with them.

Today I'm dipping into Deli Originals Topped Hommus with Pine Nuts. Am I nuts about this popular Aldi hommus, or do I need to be dip-lomatic?

What do you think? Does the war on baby rice cereal need to be that deep?

If you've bought it, I want you to feel confident you can use it without worry.

If you've chosen to offer other iron foods instead, I absolutely encourage that too!

I'm here to support parents to feed their baby with confidence, without causing fear or making it complicated.

Rice cereal seems to be one of the most controversial baby foods.

Some people have big feelings about rice cereal, so I thought I would share mine with you.

Let me know what you think and stay tuned for part 2 👀
