Back Home and Reflecting
Outlines my trip to the UK where I engaged in recovery-related activities in North Wales and Northern Ireland, and visited family and friends in England.

I then flew to Belfast where I was picked up by Gary Rutherford, Founder of ARC Fitness, and we headed to Derry. I spent six days there, interviewing members of this inspiring recovery community for a book I will be writing, and attending the Northern Ireland Recovery Walk...

'Three Years of Freedom: Jamie Edwards
I have a beautiful wife who has stood beside me through so much. I have children who give my life a purpose I never thought I’d have. I have family and friends who love me, support me and believe in me. I get to wake up in my own home, go to work, coach boxing, help people, be a husband, be a dad and actually LIVE.'

My Visit to ARC Fitness in Derry
Four days of interviews with the ARC Team for a forthcoming book about this inspiring recovery initiative, taking part in the Recovery Walk NI, and involvement in various other activities.

I then conducted a dozen more detailed interviews with these and other team members (and a person who had been attending the Family Support Group) whilst I was in Derry. I'll conduct further interviews on Zoom once I return to Australia, write these stories up, and develop...

My North Wales Visit, Part 2
This blog post covers the Launch of the two books I wrote about North Wales Recovery Communities, held in Bwyd Da Bangor on 19 September 2026. I gave talks, community members gave Shares on Transforming Pain Into Power, and other speakers contributed. A wonderful evening included book signings.

My main talk included describing some of the elements that facilitate recovery at NWRC, using quotes from people who had attended Penrhyn House. Such elements include hope, safety, belonging, connection, relationships, reciprocity, choice, opportunity, and story.

My North Wales Visit, Part 1
Covers my giving talks on trauma and healing at Penrhyn House for North Wales Recovery Communities (NWRC), my attending a MOIMR group session in Holyhead, and participating in a Service of Remembrance and Hope at St Deiniol's Cathedral in Bangor. A wonderful two days last week. So good to see NWRC folk again, and to meet new people.

On Friday morning, I attended the Service of Remembrance and Hope at St Deiniol's Cathedral in Bangor, a service 'In memory for those who have died, and as a symbol of hope for everyone affected by addiction.' The Welcome and Opening Address were...

North Wales Recovery Communities have been ‘feeding’ the community ‘petri dish’ with charismatic Recovery Carriers. Each one of these individuals is helping change the lives of other people in the wider community, both in terms of the present, but also the future. They are creating a ripple effect of recovery.

The environment and people at Penrhyn House are geared up to help new residents feel safe and have the belief that they are in the right place. New residents enter a place with others like themselves, who understand them and the world from which they have come. A place where they are accepted and find hope, and where magic happens. And magic certainly happened to Lee Daly when he met Saffron Roberts and heard her story during his first visit to Penrhyn House.

Traumatic, or long-term, unpredictable stressful experiences, lead to a sensitisation of the body’s stress response systems such that they become hyper-vigilant or hyper-reactive in the future. The latter states may lead to further problems for the person, including being re-traumatised by another event or person—including health care practitioners, institutions, or systems—due to the person’s sensitised stress response system.

In trying to understand the nature of trauma, we need to look at three different components. Firstly, the Event (or events) itself. Secondly, the Experience of the event—whether it is physically or emotionally harmful, or life-threatening. Thirdly, the adverse Effects on functioning the event creates, be they mental, physical, social, emotional, or spiritual.

The founder of North Wales Recovery Communities has the following to say about developing a recovery community. ‘You've got to approach this from a humble point of view, that you don't know everything. That you’ve just got this idea for how it should be, but you've got to be prepared to adapt and switch with the demands of what the community wants, and everything that comes with that.'
