Celebrating Oxi Day Together! 🇬🇷

Today, we welcomed 50 students from St. Andrew's Grammar, WA to Hellenic Community Aged Care for a special Oxi Day celebration with our residents.

Our students treated residents to a wonderful performance of traditional Greek songs and dancing, bringing plenty of smiles and a lovely sense of nostalgia to the afternoon.

It was a beautiful opportunity to bring generations together through music, dance and our shared Greek heritage, while honouring the traditions that continue to connect our community.

A heartfelt thank you to the students and staff of St. Andrew's Grammar for taking the time to celebrate with us and making the occasion so memorable for our residents.

Remembering Oxi Day | 28 October 🇬🇷

"We will not say that Greeks fight like heroes, but that heroes fight like Greeks."

Today, we join Greeks around the world in commemorating Oxi Day, remembering the courage and resilience of the Greek people who stood against Fascist Italy on 28 October 1940.

For many of our residents, Oxi Day holds a particularly meaningful connection to their heritage, family histories and the stories passed down through generations.

At Hellenic Community Aged Care, we are proud to honour these traditions and the rich cultural heritage that continues to connect our residents, families and wider community.

Yesterday, we welcomed some very special furry and feathered visitors as the Animal Farm on Wheels returned for another delightful afternoon! 💕

Our residents enjoyed spending time with sheep, geese, chickens and rabbits, with plenty of cuddles and smiles that filled our courtyard.

It was a lovely opportunity to enjoy some animal companionship and share a few heartwarming moments together. Safe to say, our adorable visitors were a hit with everyone! 🐓

🎻 A Special Performance from WASO! 🎶
Yesterday, our residents enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of live music as a string quartet from the West Australian Symphony Orchestra who performed a special concert for Hellenic Community Aged Care! Residents, families, volunteers and staff gathered in B-Wing to experience a diverse repertoire of classical favourites, opera selections, film themes and traditional melodies.

The performance featured accomplished musicians Rebecca Glorie and Andrea Mendham on violin, Nik Babic on viola, and Shigeru Komatsu on cello, with Sofia Roberts, WASO Community Engagement Coordinator, providing fascinating introductions and insights into each piece performed.

"Our residents were absolutely thrilled by this exceptional concert," said Paul Savvas, CEO of Hellenic Community Aged Care.

"For an afternoon, the music lifted us beyond the everyday, taking us on a journey through the story and emotion woven into each musical piece. What made the experience especially valuable for us, is that it brings world-class live music directly to our residents, including many who would find it difficult to attend a full external concert in person.

Welcoming Professor Hamid R. Sohrabi to Hellenic Community Aged Care!
Today, we were delighted to welcome Professor Hamid R. Sohrabi, Director of the Centre for Healthy Ageing and Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at Murdoch University, to Hellenic Community Aged Care.

Accompanied by our Board Member and Geriatrician, Dr Roger Warne, and CEO, Mr Paul Savvas, Professor Sohrabi toured our facilities and learned more about the services and programs we provide to support our residents.

The visit provided a valuable opportunity to share insights and to discuss emerging developments in healthy ageing. We look forward to continuing conversations with the Professor on innovation and excellence in aged care.

Here are a few photos from Thursday, 1 October, of our residents enjoying an al fresco BBQ lunch beneath clear blue skies, surrounded by flowers and olive trees in our beautiful courtyard. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the United Nations International Day of Older Persons, recognising the warmth, wisdom and care that older generations contribute to our community every day.
