Did you know you may be eligible for Medicare rebates for psychology appointments?

If you're considering seeing a psychologist, you might have heard of a Mental Health Treatment Plan.

For eligible patients, a GP can prepare a plan that provides access to Medicare rebates for up to 10 individual psychology sessions per calendar year.

Typically, you'll initially be referred for up to six sessions, followed by a review with your GP to discuss your progress and whether further sessions may be helpful.

You don't need a referral to see a psychologist privately! You can contact a psychologist directly and pay their private fees without a referral. You just won't be able to claim the Medicare rebate for those appointments.

At Akana, we have Susan, our psychologist, here to support you.

Pea's are still in season in Perth! These little green gems bring plenty of goodness to the plate.

🌱 Fibre to help support healthy digestion
🌱 Plant-based protein to help keep you satisfied
🌱 Vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, folate and vitamin K, to support normal body functions

Fresh, frozen or added to your favourite meals, peas are an easy way to add a little more variety to your diet.

Try tossing them through pasta, adding them to soups or salads, or blending them into a dip.

Sometimes, nutritious choices can be as simple as making the most of the little things.

Good news for anyone thinking about seeing a naturopath!

Private health rebates for naturopathy are making a return, with some health funds now offering benefits through eligible extras policies.

This is a welcome change, and if you’ve been considering booking an appointment with a naturopath at Akana, it’s worth checking whether your health fund offers rebates for your visits.

Every fund and policy is different, so we recommend checking directly with your insurer to find out what you’re covered for and how much you may be able to claim.

A little check now could help you make the most of your extras cover!

Save this post so you don't forget! and get in touch with our team if you have questions about booking with one of our naturopaths.

Getting back into exercise? 🏃‍♀️

Before increasing your training, it can be useful to check how balanced your body is.

The Bunkie Test looks at different lines of strength and stability through the body. We string your body along different lines of fascia in each of these positions.

If you notice a difference between your left and right sides, it doesn’t necessarily mean you simply have a “weak” muscle. Your body may be bracing or protecting through certain areas to create stability.

These positions should be performed with good form and without pain or discomfort. Aim to hold each position for 30 seconds on both sides of the body.

As part of Claires Lyno assessment, she can help you understand what may be behind an imbalance and guide you in the right direction, rather than simply strengthening the side that feels weaker.

Think of it as a useful check-in before you ask more of your body.

Want to know what your Bunkie results are telling you?

Your health is more than a symptom.

It’s your sleep.
Your energy.
Your stress.
Your hormones.
Your lifestyle.
Your story.

Because sometimes, understanding how you feel means looking beyond the symptom and considering the bigger picture.

That’s why we look at the whole picture.

Today's bone health reminder comes with a few jumps from the team 🤸‍♀️

Jumping may be more beneficial for your bones than you think.

Weight-bearing impact exercises such as jumping can provide a stimulus that helps support bone mineral density, particularly around areas such as the hips and spine.

Healthy Bones Australia recommends that people with normal bone health work towards 50 impacts per session, which can be broken into short sets such as 5 × 10 jumps, with rest between sets.

A few tips:

✔️ Start with both feet
✔️ Keep your knees soft
✔️ Land quietly and under control
✔️ Focus on quality rather than jumping as high as possible

Important: Jumping isn't suitable for everyone. If you have osteoporosis, low bone density, a history of fractures or another condition affecting your bones or joints, seek individual advice before starting impact exercise.

Did you know that a traditional Ayurvedic herb is being studied for its potential role in supporting women through menopause?

Asparagus root extract, including Asparagus racemosus (Shatavari), has attracted growing interest in women’s health, with research exploring its potential to help alleviate some menopausal symptoms.

From hot flushes and sleep changes to mood and fatigue, menopause can look different for everyone, and so can the support that feels right.

While the research is promising, herbal medicine isn't one-size-fits-all. The type of extract, dosage, other medications and your individual health history all need to be considered.

Swipe through to learn more about what the research is telling us.

Integrative care considers the whole picture, including where evidence-based complementary approaches may fit.

If you're navigating perimenopause or menopause and wondering what options might be appropriate for you, speak with a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Have you tried ginger tea after a meal?

Ginger has a long history of use in traditional medicine and has also been studied for its role in supporting digestion and easing nausea.

But sometimes, it's simply about the ritual.

A warm cup.
A moment to pause.
A little ginger.

What’s your favourite tea ritual?
