👉Have you been referred for a FibroScan and aren’t quite sure what it involves or why you need one?
A FibroScan is a quick, non-invasive test that helps assess the health of your liver by measuring liver stiffness and estimating the amount of fat present. Your doctor may recommend a FibroScan for several reasons, including:
Fatty liver disease (MASLD or MASH)
Hepatitis B or C
Alcohol-related liver disease
High cholesterol, diabetes or metabolic syndrome
Obesity
An indeterminate FIB-4 blood test result
So, what can you expect?
The test is similar to an ultrasound. You’ll lie on an examination bed while a small probe is placed against your skin over the liver. It’s generally painless, takes around 10–15 minutes and doesn’t involve any needles.
The results help your doctor better understand your liver health, identify signs of scarring, determine whether further investigation is needed and monitor changes over time.
In some cases, a FibroScan can also help avoid the need for a liver biopsy.
