🌿 Did you know perimenopause can affect more than your periods, sleep and mood?

Your lungs can be part of the picture too!

As oestrogen levels fluctuate and decline, changes in respiratory function can occur. Some women notice that they become more breathless during exercise, find certain activities more tiring or experience changes in their breathing.

The good news? There are plenty of ways to support your respiratory health as you move through midlife. 💚

✨ Keep moving and stay physically active.
✨ Build your cardiovascular fitness.
✨ Practise relaxed, controlled breathing.
✨ Avoid smoking and minimise exposure to pollutants.
✨ Pay attention to changes in your breathing.

And remember, persistent or unexplained breathlessness shouldn’t automatically be blamed on hormones. It’s worth getting checked.

Your body is changing, but that doesn’t mean you have to stop doing the things you love.

Let’s make understanding our changing bodies part of looking after ourselves.

💚 What’s one thing you’re doing today to invest in your lung health for the years ahead?

LUNG HEALTH

It’s so important as we age to keep breathing deeply. It expands all the little muscles and tendons and fascia in your rib cage and chest, it slows the nervous system and mind, it helps your heart.

Normal modern day breath is not deep enough.

Try box breathing as you go off to sleep tonight and tell me it doesn’t give you the best nights sleep ever.

WHY BALANCE TRAINING BECOMES MORE IMPORTANT AS WE AGE

We spend plenty of time thinking about strength, fitness and flexibility as we get older. But there’s another important piece of the puzzle that often gets overlooked: BALANCE.

As we age, our balance can naturally decline due to changes in muscle strength, coordination, reaction time and our body’s ability to sense where it is in space.

Why does this matter?

Because good balance helps us:

* Reduce our risk of injury if we fall over.
* Stay confident when walking on uneven surfaces.
* Maintain independence in everyday activities.
* Move with greater control and coordination.
* Keep doing the things we love, for longer.

And here’s the good news: Balance is a skill you can keep training at any age!

You don’t need complicated exercises or expensive equipment. Even a few minutes of balance practice, incorporated into your weekly routine, can make a difference.

Don’t just train to be stronger. Train to stay steady, confident and independent.

Because getting older shouldn’t mean putting your life on hold.

HAVE YOU HURT YOUR ROTATOR CUFF?

💪 What is your rotator cuff, and why is it so important?

Your shoulder is designed to move in many different directions, but that mobility comes with a challenge: keeping the joint stable while you move.

That’s where your rotator cuff comes in!

🔹 What is it?
Your rotator cuff is a group of four muscles and their tendons that surround your shoulder joint.

🔹 What does it do?
These muscles help:
✔️ Stabilise your shoulder joint as you move.
✔️ Rotate your arm inwards and outwards.
✔️ Lift and control your arm.
✔️ Support everyday activities like reaching overhead, getting dressed and lifting objects.

🔹 What happens when there’s a problem?
Rotator cuff problems can cause shoulder pain, weakness and difficulty with everyday activities. Symptoms may develop gradually or after an injury.

🔹 Can you improve your shoulder function?
Absolutely! Tailored exercise and gradual strengthening can help improve shoulder strength, movement and function.

✨ The takeaway: Your rotator cuff does much more than help you lift your arm. It plays an important role in controlling and stabilising your shoulder throughout the day.

💬 Have you ever experienced shoulder pain when reaching overhead or lying on your side?

💪 STRONGER SHOULDERS START BEFORE YOUR FIRST REP!

Did you know that how you position your shoulder blades can influence how you move during shoulder strength exercises?

Before you begin your shoulder workout, take a moment to set your shoulder blades.

🌿 Try this simple 3-step cue:

1. Stand tall
Keep your neck relaxed, your chest comfortable and your shoulders away from your ears.

2. Gently squeeze together
Draw your shoulder blades slightly towards each other, as if you are bringing them closer to your spine.

3. Gently draw them down
Let your shoulder blades move slightly down your back, without forcing them or arching your lower back.

✨ Now breathe normally and begin your exercise.

Remember, this is a gentle movement, not a hard squeeze. Your shoulder blades also need to move naturally during many exercises, particularly when reaching overhead, so don’t hold them rigidly in one position for every movement.

🩵 Why does this matter?

Developing awareness of your shoulder blade position can help you improve movement control and build a foundation for shoulder strength work.

Start gently, use a comfortable range and stop if you experience pain.

Small changes in how you move can help you build confidence in your body at every age.

Save this post to revisit before your next shoulder workout!
