From facial expressions and gestures to communication books, symbols, apps and speech-generating devices, AAC can take many different forms, and you might already be using some without realising it.

There’s a lot to learn when you first enter the world of AAC, so we’re breaking down some of the basics.

Swipe through for an introduction to unaided and aided AAC, electronic and non-electronic options, multimodal communication and why the person using AAC should always be at the centre of the choices we make.

Save this one for later or share it with someone who’s new to AAC.

Communication is more than words. It’s connection, choice, personality, independence, relationships, laughter and so much more.

This October, we’re celebrating AAC Awareness Month with our theme: more than words.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) supports people to communicate in ways that work for them, whether that’s one form of AAC or a combination of methods, alongside speech or instead of it.

There’s no one “right” way to communicate. All forms of communication are valid.

Throughout October, we’ll be sharing stories and perspectives from AAC users, families and our wider community, celebrating what communication makes possible.

What does communication mean to you? Tell us below and follow along as we recognise AAC Awareness Month. Learn more in our blog: https://www.zyteq.com.au/blog/aac-awareness-month-2026-more-than-words

18 months ago, we shared Tristan and Sullivan’s AAC story. Since then, their communication has continued to grow, and their individual personalities and communication styles are shining through.

From talking about upcoming events and choosing activities on family days out, to reading stories, expressing emotions and planning a 10th birthday party, Grid for iPad is helping the brothers communicate more of what matters to them.

We caught up with their mum, Faye, to hear how things have changed and what she wishes more people understood about children who use AAC.

Trying eye gaze again can come with uncertainty, especially when previous experiences haven’t worked well.

Oliver recently started using our Evo eye tracker with his Grid Pad 13, and in our latest story he shares how it has supported his communication and computer access alongside his involuntary movements and tinted Irlen glasses.

From using eye gaze in different environments to keeping up more easily in conversation, Oliver reflects on what has changed for him and why access to technology is about much more than communication alone.

Communication goes beyond expressing wants and needs.

It's about sharing a joke, giving a compliment, telling a story and connecting with the people around you.

Ellise's and Elijah's experiences remind us that social competency helps AAC users build relationships, express their personalities and take part in the everyday moments that matter most.

AAC is about much more than a device. It is about bringing together the right communication software, access method, positioning and technology to support each person’s communication and participation.

Our team recently had the pleasure of spending an afternoon with the Speech Pathology and Occupational Therapy team at Glenroy Specialist School for a practical AAC education session.

Together, we explored ways Grid can be used and adapted to support students to communicate, engage and participate in learning, different access methods including eye gaze and switches, communication devices, wheelchair mounting and positioning.

Hands-on sessions like these provide an opportunity to bring the different parts of an AAC solution together, explore the technology in practice and share knowledge around how it can be adapted for different students, environments and communication needs.

Thank you to the team at Glenroy Specialist School for welcoming us and for such an engaged and thoughtful session. We loved spending the afternoon with you.

If your school or team would like to explore a practical AAC training session tailored to your setting, please let us know via our form: https://bit.ly/3Ti5uLi

Karanveer explains why he uses different access methods for different tasks.

Eye gaze helps him communicate and write. A head mouse gives him more control when editing videos. A blink switch makes clicking quicker.

There isn't a single "right" way to access technology. The best tool is the one that works for the person, their goals and the task at hand.
