Privately practising midwives play an important role in supporting women, babies and families through some of life's most significant moments.

The NMBA has released an advance copy of the revised Safety and quality guidelines for privately practising midwives.

The guidelines are designed to support midwives in delivering safe, high-quality care, including culturally safe care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and person-centered care that responds to the diverse needs of people in the community.

The revised guidelines come into effect on 1 January 2027.

Registered health practitioners must act in the best interests of their patients.

That's why Ahpra and the National Boards are concerned about emerging business models that present conflicts of interest, including those that advertise, prescribe and dispense a single medicine.

Read our interim guidance to help registered health practitioners manage these conflicts of interest: https://www.ahpra.gov.au/News/2026-09-24-Conflicts-of-interest
