Today I sat to meditate and my mind was racing. The to do list, so many ideas - for workshops, for fun, for community… so many thoughts.

I found it hard to tune my awareness deeper - to my energy or my heart. Everything racing.

And I reminded myself - this is not a ‘bad’ meditation. Meditation is not about sitting with a quiet mind. It is about practicing sitting with the mind, however it is in the moment. Seeing thoughts arise, but not following or getting caught up in them. Noticing how busy the mind is, and being able to sit with that awareness.

I have a couple of pranayams that help me when my mind is racing like this - and after a few rounds of kapalabhati and some mantra, I could settle into my heart and feel the expansiveness of the moment, regardless of thoughts.

With a little bit of compassion for myself, nourishing breath and conscious awareness, a meditation that many would have labelled as ‘bad’ turned into a profound and beautiful moment in my day

I hope you can find a couple of those in your day 🙏🏼❤️

💫 journal prompts for the winter solstice 💫

It's almost the winter solstice. This Sunday is the longest night of the year, the point where the days start getting longer.

The winter solstice is like nature’s new year. In the Northern Hemisphere - New Year’s Day and the winter solstice are situated adjacent to each other - but in the Southern Hemisphere, we are inverted.

With the winter solstice, we have just completed a full growth cycle from the solstice of last year, through the blossoming of spring, the fullness of summer, the slowly fade of autumn, and into the stillness of winter again.

It is a beautiful time for reflection - if you have a regular meditation or journaling practice, or just like things to ponder while out walking - take a moment to reflect on these prompts:

💫what were the fruits of the growing season that has been? Think about these not just in things you have achieved, but also lessons learnt, and inward shifts in perspective.

💫 where was there flow, and where did you have to push for things to move?

💫 what were your biggest areas of growth?

💫 where can you see that more knowledge, skills or expereince would have been helpful?

💫 how would you like to feel more often over the coming growth cycle?

💫 can you feel anything starting to move within or emerge? These might be projects, lifestyle changes, practices.

💫 and finally, where is the room for more light in your life?

When you ask yourself these questions, try not to go searching for the answers or jump into active thinking mode. Instead, ask the question, quieten the mind, and see what arises from a deeper awareness.

I hope you have a wonderful solstice filled with warmth and light ✨

Ren 🙏💛

The winter solstice is approaching - it is such a lovely time of year!! The long and rainy winter nights (like tonight!) yet longer days approaching.

For me it is a bit of a favourite 😻

The beginning of the new growth cycle - where the light slowly starts returning, building… a beautiful time to set intentions for the new year / cycle ahead (kinda like New Years resolutions - except the timing is swapped with the northern hemisphere.

I am running a breath and sound journey at the Red Hill Mechanics Hall - next Monday 22nd June at 6.30pm.

We will start the journey with some seated pranayama and grounding, experience a gentle conscious connected breath journey and finish with a beautiful sound bath of Himalayan singing bowls, drum and guitar.

What a way to ease into a long winters night!

Hope to see you there

It is such a beautiful idea - that within each one of us there is a place that is always calm, that is always at peace.

As the outer world gets more chaotic, and maybe even overwhelming for some, it can bring such strength to know that this inner place of peace and calm exists, and to know how to get there.

The ‘koshas’ are a concept in yoga philosophy that maps the layers of the Self and creates a beautiful framework for navigating towards inner peace. The ‘anandamaya kosha’, or the bliss layer, sits right at the heart of our being, and is where feelings of calm, peace, joy and compassion are always present.

Join me Sunday 24th May at YogaLYFE studio in Middle Park to explore the koshas, to find the pathway to inner peace, and to spend a nourishing afternoon reconnecting with your deepest Self.
