🎵 A little song for a big everyday moment 🎵

Music therapy doesn't stop at the clinic door. Some of the most meaningful musical moments happen at home, when parents bring their creativity, care and understanding of their child into everyday routines. 💛

Gemma, one of the mums in our Sound Expression community, is a wonderful example of this. She composed her own song to help her son Max with putting on his shoes, turning an everyday task into a fun musical moment!

🎶
"We're putting Max's shoes so his bones grow correctly,
we're putting on Max's shoes so he can stand straightly;
we're putting on Max's shoes so he can walk, jump and run,
we're putting on Max's shoes so he can have lots of fun."

We love how freely and intuitively Gemma uses music in everyday life — creating songs that connect with Max, support his routines and help make daily tasks more engaging.

Gemma wanted to share her song with Winnie, Max's Music Therapist, during their session at our clinic. It was a lovely opportunity to celebrate the music already happening at home and explore how music can support Max in his everyday life.

✨ Sometimes, the most meaningful songs aren't found in a songbook. They're created by the people who know our children best.

There’s a lot going on in this session snippet of The Climb — and each participant has their own part to focus on:

🥁 Dre is working on sustained attention and self-regulation — staying focused, maintaining a consistent beat and regulating his responses so he can stay with the music.

🎤 Hannah is developing flexibility and collaborative skills — listening to what the other musicians are doing, adapting and contributing to the group rather than following her own way of doing things.

🪘 Karuka is working on bilateral coordination and motor control by using both upper limbs, while also building confidence in producing greater force and volume. She is also challenged to increase her pace and maintain a faster tempo than she would naturally choose.

🎹 Jeremy is working on sustained attention, motor planning and regulation as he focuses on his piano part. This requires him to sustain a high level of concentration while remaining engaged with the music and the group.

Together, they’re listening to each other, holding their individual parts and making the music work as a team. That’s the beauty of group music therapy — the same song can create a different challenge and opportunity for every person involved. 🎶

🎵 Blunt the Knives 🎵

One of our group members loves The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and suggested the song ‘Blunt the Knives’. We took his idea on board and turned it into a fun musical activity that supports social communication and other important life skills.

Working in pairs, the group members faced each other and played rhythm sticks together in a repeating pattern — stomp, stomp, right, left — while taking turns singing the verses. When one pair was singing, they stopped playing to focus on their words, while the other pairs continued with the rhythm. Then it was time to swap!

It looks like a lot of fun (and it is!), but there’s plenty happening underneath the music:

🎤 Vocal skills — singing all the syllables clearly and with good volume.
🥁 Motor coordination — coordinating their movements with another person to maintain the rhythm-stick pattern.
👀 Attention and turn-taking — recognising when it is their turn to sing and when to wait.
🧠 Multitasking — managing singing, movement, rhythm and social interaction within the same activity.
🎯 Inhibition and self-regulation — resisting the urge to sing when it is someone else’s turn, and shifting attention between playing, listening and singing.

And perhaps most importantly, the whole activity started with one group member’s idea and interest. When we build music around what matters to the people in the group, there’s plenty of motivation to join in, work together and have fun along the way. 💙
