People often ask me, “Why do you do this?”
Why do I dedicate my time to organising free community Tai Chi & Qigong practices?
The answer is actually very simple. 💜
My own journey with chronic pain led me to Tai Chi and Qigong.
Living with chronic pain has never been easy. And while I still battle with pain today, Tai Chi and Qigong have helped me manage it so much better.
The pain hasn’t magically disappeared, but through gentle movement, breathing, mindfulness and learning to listen to my body, I’ve found ways to improve my wellbeing and quality of life.
And that is something I wanted to continue practising.
I had always admired how people gathered in parks across Asia to practise Tai Chi and Qigong together. No fuss, no expectations. Just people sharing movement, breathing and a little peace in their day.
I simply wanted someone to practise with.
I wanted to bring that same experience to Shellharbour.
So I started our little community practice, hoping a few people would join me.
I never imagined it would grow into what it is today.
What began as a simple wish has become a beautiful community. Strangers have become friends, people look out for one another, and every week we come together for something that benefits both body and mind.
And why do I continue?
Because I know firsthand how much a gentle, consistent practice can make a difference.
Because I believe Tai Chi and Qigong should be accessible to everyone, regardless of age, ability, experience or financial circumstances.
Because sometimes, it’s not just about the exercise. It’s about having somewhere to go, people to connect with and a reason to keep moving.
And because I believe we can all learn from one another, no matter where we are on our journey.
Along the way, my own Tai Chi journey has grown too. Becoming an instructor has given me the opportunity to share more of what I’ve learnt and offer structured classes for those who wish to deepen their understanding and advance their practice.
But our free community practices will always remain close to my heart.
My reason for doing this hasn’t really changed.
I’m still managing my own pain, still learning, still practising and still discovering the benefits of Tai Chi and Qigong.
And I still just want people to practise with.
Only now, instead of a handful of people, I have a whole community to share this journey with.
And for that, I am truly grateful. 💜
Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey, whether you’ve joined us once or have been coming since the beginning.
It was never about how many people would turn up. It was about having someone to practise with.
And look what we’ve created together.
