1. Choose your artist first. Find someone whose style you love and who has experience with large back pieces. Look at their healed work too.

2. Think about the whole back. Even if you’re starting with one section, discuss how it could fit into a complete piece later.

3. Bring ideas, not a design to copy. References help explain what you like. Give your artist room to create something that’s yours.

4. Be open to placement and scale. A design needs to work with your shoulders, spine and the shape of your body.

5. Decide how far you want it to extend. Shoulders, ribs, lower back, bum… talk about the boundaries before you start.

6. Understand the commitment. A full back piece usually takes multiple sessions. Ask what the process could look like for your design.

7. Plan your budget for the whole project. Think beyond the first appointment and discuss how you’ll space out sessions.

8. Check your calendar. Holidays, swimming, training and physical work can affect when you book and how you manage healing.

9. Plan for aftercare. Your back is difficult to reach. Work out how you’ll follow your artist’s instructions and whether you’ll need help.

10. Book a consultation before committing. Meet your artist, ask questions and make sure you’re comfortable with the plan.

A back piece is a big commitment. Give the planning as much thought as the tattoo.

Free consultations with Stefano Forte , Japanese Traditional Tattoing are available. It all starts with a booking! Reach out and let’s have a chat.
