The Family Room WA Holly - ‘The Mindset Midwife’

Hi, I’m Holly! I’m a nurse & midwife here in Perth, WA. Why Choose Us?

Empowering new and expecting parents with education, workshops, and private midwifery support - including homebirth - to create a thriving family environment." As a midwife of over a decade, and having worked in almost a dozen different health services & locations, the one thing I’ve become really passionate about is supportive and empowering care for mums and families. This has shown up in several ways in my practice, and led me to include other modalities in my care and services within my own business, The Family Room, where I’ve enjoyed being able to support parents to become the best and most free versions of themselves. WHAT IF WE STOPPED ASKING, “WHY WOULD YOU CHOOSE A HOMEBIRTH?” AND STARTED ASKING, “HAVE YOU BEEN GIVEN THE CHOICE?” 🤍

Homebirth is often surrounded by questions, misconceptions and strong opinions. But every woman deserves the opportunity to explore her birth options with evidence-based information, respectful support and informed choice.

For some families, homebirth offers the opportunity to birth in familiar surroundings, with personalised care and a known homebirth midwife.

🤍 Here are just a few glimpses of my beautiful homebirth mums and the incredible journeys they’ve shared with me.
Every family, every birth and every story is unique, and it’s such a privilege to be invited into these precious moments.

But homebirth isn't right for everyone — and that's okay. 🤍

What matters is that you understand your options, the potential benefits and risks, and what is involved in planning a homebirth safely.

✨ Skilled midwifery care
✨ Individualised assessment and care
✨ Thoughtful birth planning
✨ Clear emergency and hospital transfer arrangements
✨ Ongoing support for you and your baby

As a midwife, I believe you deserve more than simply being told where and how to give birth!

You deserve to be informed, heard, supported and involved in decisions about YOUR birth.

This Homebirth Awareness Week, let's open up the conversation, challenge the misconceptions and make space for informed choices — without judgement. 🤍

💬 Let's talk! Have you ever considered a homebirth, or is there something about homebirth you'd love to know more about?

🤍 Holly x

WAIT… 43%? 👀

The latest Australian maternity data stats have a pretty big story to tell 📖

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) in 2023, 42.8% — rounded to 43% — of selected first-time mothers had their labour induced 🤰 And this isn't every first-time mum

The AIHW “selected” group includes women who:

🤰 were 20–34 years old
👶 were having their first baby
📅 gave birth at 37–40 completed weeks
👶 had a singleton baby
⬇️ baby was in a head-down/vertex position

This group represented around 25% of all women who gave birth in Australia in 2023 🌏

Now look at the change over time 👇

📊 2004 — 25.9%
📊 2020 — 46%
📊 2023 — 42.8%

That's an increase of 16.9 percentage points since 2004 — meaning the proportion was about 1.65 x the 2004 rate 🧮

And the increase wasn't evenly spread across the whole period 📈

AIHW reports that most of the increase occurred during the last decade, before the rate reached around 46% in 2020 (during c*vid) and then decreased slightly to 43% in 2023.

There are some other interesting numbers sitting alongside this trend 👉🏽

For the same selected group:

➡️ Non-instrumental vaginal birth:
53.0% in 2004 → 41.6% in 2023 (we’re now under 50% - the tipping point)

➡️ Instrumental vaginal birth:
22.6% in 2004 → 21.9% in 2023

➡️ Caesarean birth:
24.5% in 2004 → 36.5% in 2023 (but outcomes haven’t dramatically improved)

These are national trends occurring over the same period. They don't, on their own, tell us that induction caused the changes in mode of birth — that's a much more complicated question 🤔

So the question isn't simply:

“Are more women being induced?” cos the data clearly shows that they are.

The bigger questions are:

🤔 Why has the rate increased so substantially?
🤔 What clinical and practice changes have contributed?
🤔 What reasons are being given for induction?
🤔 How are women being supported to understand their options?
🤔 And what happens along the birth pathway after induction?

AIHW describes induction as an intervention used for a range of reasons, including maternal or bab
