You can be deeply driven and still be the one in charge of your drive.

The left side is common advice for ambitious people. Some of it has its place, but a lot of it treats the drive itself as the problem.

The right side keeps the ambition and looks at what’s underneath it instead:
➡️ What’s driving how you feel, and what your sense of worth is riding on
➡️ Capacity and support that match the load you’re carrying
➡️ Recovery as a skill you build, rather than a holiday you wait for
➡️ Clear goals, so you can see whether the work is actually helping

None of this means wanting less. You can still care about success without letting it decide your worth.

The busiest part of the week might be the only part holding you together.

Work is often the last thing depression takes. Sometimes it’s the only thing left.

Depression can affect the brain’s reward system, making things that once felt good feel muted. When that happens, deadlines, routines and other people’s expectations can end up doing the job motivation used to do.

My free guide includes a self-check using the PHQ-9, a questionnaire commonly used to screen for depressive symptoms. It can help you reflect on what you’ve been experiencing, even when life still looks manageable from the outside.

👉The Self-Check guide is a screening tool, not a diagnosis.
👉If your score falls in the moderate range or above, consider speaking with a qualified mental health professional.
👉It also includes support resources alongside the question about thoughts of self-harm or being better off dead in the item 9 of PHQ-9, so you know where to turn if you need help.

If you’re in the US, call or text 988 for crisis support. If you’re in Australia, call Lifeline on 13 11 14.

Comment CHECK and I’ll send you the guide.

I wrote a letter to the little girl I used to be.

It’s about the life she ends up with. Breaking the cycle. The big things. And the everyday things she never got to do as a kid.

Posting something this personal still doesn’t come easily to me. But I’m doing it anyway.

Today is World Mental Health Day, and this year’s theme is “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change.”

It’s a reminder that some of the most important voices in mental health belong to people who’ve lived through it.

For someone struggling while everyone assumes you’re managing, hearing another person describe the same experience can be the moment you realize you’re not the only one.

Every lived experience matters, whether it’s been shared with anyone yet or not.

Two years in, the thing we’re proudest of at Ascendant Bali is the team that’s still here.

When we started, we wanted to build something ethical in a space with too many unqualified voices. Part of that meant looking after the people doing the work, so we pay our clinicians above market rate. Many of the team who were with us at the start are still with us today.

Swipe through to celebrate them, the clients who trusted us with their care, and the island that has supported us along the way.

Happy 2 years, Ascendant Bali.

R U OK? Day exists because looking okay and being okay aren’t the same thing, and that gap is easiest to hide in the person who never stops moving.

High-functioning can be its own disguise. Someone can get everything done, show up for everyone else, and rarely ask for anything back, and still be struggling underneath it. Being busy can actually make it harder for the people around them to notice.

So, when you ask, “are you okay,” leave space for the real answer. If it’s no, you don’t have to fix it. Just listen, and don’t rush the silence. Someone might need a moment to find words for something they’ve been holding for a while.

One conversation isn’t always enough either. Checking in again later can matter just as much.

Think of the person in your life who always seems to have it together. Today’s a good day to ask twice.

As I sat down to write “my story,” it was hard to condense it into just a few slides.

Thirty-nine years is a lot to summarise without flattening it.

My goal is to invite you into my world:

🌍 Where I come from
🧠 What’s shaped my worldview
💭 What informs my psychological practice
🏠 Why I built Ascendant Bali

I’m a registered psychologist, but I don’t pretend to be an expert on your life.

I believe my lived experience and my path to recovery have taught me just as much as my degree and professional experience. And I’m grateful that I get to use both in the privileged position of helping people walking the same road.

If you’re new to my page, welcome. I’m glad you’re here, and I hope what I offer can inspire, educate, or spark you into action in service of your true self.

To all past versions of me: I love you, thank you.

“We’re all just walking eachother home” one of my favourite quotes by Ram Dass reminds us that we’re all souls in different stages of the same journey, and that the role of a conscious being is compassionate accompaniment of others, not judgment about where they are on the path. And if we’re all walking each other home, then what is the quality of presence you would like to bring to that walk?
