Itโ€™s the little things that make you smile ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

My new business cards were delivered (!) today, beautifully printed and looking fantastic.

Tucked into the bag were a little notepad, a pen and some lollies. Such a thoughtful gesture and such a nice touch!

Thank you to Snap Print Solutions Rockdale for doing such a great job with my cards and for adding that little bit of extra kindness to the delivery. Itโ€™s these small things that make a difference and make you appreciate a business even more.

I was invited to a business networking event in Cronulla. What a lovely way to start the day!

I was asked, how a hypnotherapy session is structured, so I thought Iโ€™d share it with you too.

So, what actually happens during a hypnotherapy session?

Your first session takes about 90 minutes, and we don't jump straight into hypnosis.

We start by talking. I go through your intake form with you, then we have the pre-talk, where I get to understand how you experience the problem, what triggers it, and what might be keeping the pattern going.

I want to understand your version of the problem before deciding how we work with it.

Then hypnosis follows, which usually takes around 20 - 25 minutes.

You sit in a comfortable chair, with your eyes open or closed, and you can hear everything I say. You're not unconscious or "out of it". Hypnosis is about focused attention, not falling asleep.

And you don't have to sit perfectly still or even be completely relaxed. If you need to move, change position or even get up and walk around, that's absolutely fine.

Especially people who are struggling with addictions find it difficult to sit still.

Interestingly, once people know they're allowed to move, they often no longer want to!

We finish by discussing what you experienced. Many clients feel deeply relaxed afterwards and describe it like this:

"I could hear every word you said, but I was in my own world."

There isn't one "right" way to experience hypnosis. The important thing is that you feel comfortable, know what's happening, and remain aware throughout the process.

I'm often asked, โ€œWhatโ€™s the difference between hypnosis and hypnotherapy?โ€

It's a great question, because theyโ€™re not actually the same thing.

Hypnosis can feel much less mysterious when you understand the difference.

Hypnotherapy is the therapy. Itโ€™s the work we do to understand whatโ€™s keeping you stuck and help you create change. As a Strategic Psychotherapist, I use hypnosis as a tool to help you do that. Hypnosis is a state of focused attention (or simply being absorbed) that can make it easier to access new ways of thinking, feeling and responding.

Hypnosis is an "extended daydreaming", and itโ€™s far more familiar than people often realise. Youโ€™ve probably experienced something similar without ever calling it hypnosis, e.g. being completely absorbed in a podcast, watching a good movie, daydreaming on a long drive, or becoming so focused on something that everything around you fades into the background.

Thatโ€™s the kind of focused state, or absorption, we can use therapeutically.

The important part is what happens in that state, like a new understanding, a different perspective, and the opportunity to change patterns that may have been running on autopilot for years.

Thatโ€™s the therapy. And thatโ€™s where the real change happens.

โ€œDo you make me cluck like a chicken?โ€

Itโ€™s probably the question I get asked most on a Discovery Call.

So, hereโ€™s my answerโ€ฆ
If you genuinely wanted to cluck like a chicken, I could help you do that.

But thatโ€™s not why youโ€™re coming to see me, and itโ€™s certainly not what hypnotherapy is about.

Stage hypnotists make you cluck like a chicken, itโ€™s part of the performance. Hypnotherapy is therapeutic learning.

Stage hypnosis is designed to entertain. Itโ€™s about performance, participation and having some fun with hypnosis.

What happens in my practice in Menai, or online, is something quite different. Hypnotherapy isnโ€™t about taking control away from you. Itโ€™s about helping you regain control, often the control you didnโ€™t realise you already had.

Itโ€™s about learning how your mind works, recognising the patterns that can leave you feeling stuck, and realising that you have more influence over your thoughts, feelings and behaviours than you may have noticed.

Sometimes we spend so much time trying to control whatโ€™s happening around us that we forget thereโ€™s another kind of control available to us, your internal control.

The ability to pause.
To choose.
To respond differently.
To feel more at ease.

So, no chicken noises required.

Just you, your mind, and learning to use something that has been there all along.

Iโ€™d genuinely like to know - what did you think hypnotherapy was actually going to do to you?

The Mars Bar that changed my career! ๐Ÿซ

True storyโ€ฆ and I was the client.

At the time, I was a complete chocoholic. I was also a stressed and burnt-out Managing Director, running on sugar and adrenaline.

So I decided to try hypnotherapy.

After my very first session, I walked straight into a servo and bought a Mars Bar. I even sent my friends a selfie holding it, thinking, โ€œWellโ€ฆ that obviously didn't work!โ€ ๐Ÿ˜‚

For the next few days, I kept eating chocolate as usual, so I didn't think much had changed.

Then, towards the end of that week, I suddenly realisedโ€ฆI'd forgotten to eat chocolate.

I hadn't fought the urge. I hadn't used willpower. I hadn't been trying to resist it.
I'd simply forgotten.

And that completely intrigued me. I became fascinated with hypnotherapy and wanted to understand more about how our minds work and how we can change patterns that keep us stuck.

So I started studying. Then I studied more. I learnt so much about the mind and about myself, and I absolutely loved seeing people make changes.

Eventually, after 25 years in the corporate world, I decided to change careers.

Today, I get to help my clients understand and change the patterns that keep them stuck, rather than simply fighting them with willpower.

And that Mars Bar?

I haven't eaten one since. ๐Ÿ˜Š
