Have We Designed Healing Out of Healthcare?
We've become extraordinarily good at diagnosing and treating disease. But somewhere along the way, have we forgotten to consider the environments in which healing takes place?
Think about our hospitals. The fluorescent lighting, the constant noise, the lack of fresh air, the institutional food, the absence of nature, beauty and places to simply rest.
Now consider the ancient healing sanctuaries of Asclepius, where nature, nourishment, sleep, movement, community and the environment were all considered part of the healing experience.
I'm not suggesting we return to ancient medicine or abandon the extraordinary advances of modern healthcare. Quite the opposite. I'm asking what might be possible if we brought these worlds together.
What if our hospitals were designed not only to treat illness, but to support recovery in every sense? What if food was considered an essential part of care? What if we created spaces for recuperation rather than sending people home before they feel ready?
And what if we began to see beauty, dignity, connection and the natural world as important considerations in healthcare design?
In Episode 26 of This Is How We Heal, I explore how we've designed healing out of healthcare, what we can learn from the past, and how we might begin to reimagine the places in which we care for one another.
