Your knee cracks when you squat. It clicks when you walk upstairs. Sometimes it sounds like a bowl of Rice Bubbles. 🦵
And your first thought is probably…
“Am I damaging my knees?”
Here’s something I wish more people knew:
A noisy knee doesn’t automatically mean a damaged knee.
That clicking, popping or grinding sensation is called crepitus, and it can happen for several reasons.
Your joints can make noise even when they’re perfectly healthy.
What matters more is whether that noise comes with pain, swelling, locking or difficulty moving.
If your knees crack without pain or other symptoms, there’s often no reason to stop exercising just because of the noise.
Your knees are designed to move, adapt and get stronger.
They don’t need to be silent to be healthy.
So the next time your knee cracks during a squat, don’t automatically assume something is wrong.
Pay attention to how it feels, how it moves and what it’s capable of.
If the cracking is accompanied by pain, swelling, instability or locking, get it properly assessed.
Save this for the next time your knees start making noise.
