Choice. Control. Dignity. Gwenda Darling has spent her life fighting for all three.

Recently, we sat down with Gwenda, a 2025 nominee for Senior Australian of the Year, to talk about dementia and what good aged care really looks like.

Since being diagnosed with younger onset dementia in 2012, Gwenda has been a powerful voice for trauma-informed care. She believes older Australians should have a say in how they are cared for, and that medication, isolation and restraint should always be a last resort.

Her story is honest, strong and full of hope.

My Guardian's leadership team has attended the National Aged Care Provider Conference 2026, hosted by the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission.

One year into Australia’s significant aged care reforms, the discussions focused on what matters most: embedding human rights, dignity, and true choice into everyday care.

It was a privilege to hear from and connect with sector leaders shaping this journey, including Commissioner Liz Hefren-Webb, Chair of the Aged Care Council of Elders, Anne Burgess AM, CEO of Ageing Australia, Tom Symondson, and Interim First Nations Aged Care Commissioner Jodi Cassar.

Real transformation takes a collaborative effort across government, providers, and elders and standardising person-centred care is at the heart of it. At My Guardian, we are proud to be part of that effort and remain committed to making person-centred care the standard for every Australian that we support.
