Care isn’t just about helping someone get through the day. It’s about helping them stay connected to life!

For older people, good support can make mealtimes, conversations, routines and everyday moments more meaningful. The right care helps people continue participating, enjoying and feeling part of their community. And for those providing that care, knowledge matters too. Understanding swallowing needs is one way we can support greater confidence, dignity and safety at mealtimes.

If your team supports adults with swallowing difficulties, build their knowledge with Safe Swallowing Education.

To every carer who shows up, day after day, we see you. 💙

The extra time at mealtimes. The patience when things feel difficult. The encouragement to try again. These little things can mean so much to the person you’re supporting.
Good care starts with compassion and the right knowledge helps turn that care into greater confidence at mealtimes.

If your team supports adults with swallowing difficulties, build their knowledge with Safe Swallowing Education.

When “close enough” isn’t safe enough.

With swallowing difficulties, small details can make a big difference. A food may look safe, or a drink may seem easy to swallow, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s suitable for everyone.

Understanding texture, thickness, medication and individual recommendations help staff, carers and families make more informed decisions at mealtimes.

Because when it comes to swallowing, guessing isn’t enough. 💙 Discounts apply for businesses purchasing for their staff.

Swallowing is something we do without thinking, but there’s a lot happening behind the scenes.

Every swallow relies on the precise, coordinated movement of many muscles working together. It’s a remarkable process, and when swallowing becomes difficult, understanding what’s happening can make a real difference. 💙

Practical knowledge starts with understanding the “why.”

Have you noticed a change at mealtimes and wondered if it was just a phase?

A meal taking longer, coughing, a wet-sounding voice, or less interest in food can be easy to brush off, especially when it becomes familiar.

But these changes are worth noticing. 💙 Understanding what to look for can help staff, carers and families recognise when someone’s swallowing needs may have changed.

Hello, October. 💙

A new month is a good reminder that there’s always more to learn, especially when the people we support are counting on us.

Here’s to building knowledge, growing confidence, and creating safer, more supportive mealtimes for the people in our care.

What’s one thing you’d like to learn more about this month?

⚠️ Who trained the person training your staff?

In aged care and disability support, workplace knowledge can easily be passed from one staff member to the next.

A new employee watches an experienced worker.

That employee later trains someone else.

And eventually, a workplace practice can become:

“That’s just how we do it here.”

But when supporting someone with dysphagia, is that enough?

Ask yourself:

❓ Has your team received structured dysphagia and IDDSI education—or are you relying on knowledge being passed down from person to person?

When swallowing safety is involved, assumptions and inherited habits shouldn't replace appropriate education.

⚠️ Would your staff notice an outdated mealtime plan?

Having a swallowing or mealtime plan on file can create a sense of security.

But here's the uncomfortable question:

How confident are you that every staff member knows they're working from the correct, current recommendations?

In busy aged care and disability environments, teams change. Information is handed over. Documents are updated.

And when staff don't have a strong understanding of dysphagia and IDDSI, would they even recognise when something doesn't seem right?

Don't assume that having a plan means everyone understands it.

“But I just want some chips.” 🍟

For one man Barbara supported, that simple request represented far more than food.

He was living with a degenerative neurological condition and had swallowing recommendations that significantly restricted what he could safely eat and drink.

But he missed going to the café and eating the foods he enjoyed.

Can you blame him?

The difficulty was that previous attempts to eat those foods had resulted in serious choking incidents.

Suddenly, the people supporting him were faced with a complicated question:

What happens when choice and swallowing safety collide?

Supporting someone with dysphagia isn't simply about saying “you can't eat that.”

It requires knowledge, understanding and genuinely person-centred care.

And when staff don't understand the reasons behind swallowing recommendations, difficult situations become even harder to navigate.

⚠️ Would your team feel prepared?

🎓 Give your staff the dysphagia education they need before they're faced with the decision.
