Unless we're educated or guided about what to say and do regarding any life event we tend to luck out or stumble our way through such circumstances. People particularly clam up around those suffering grief with the death of a loved one. They may think, 'I don't want to upset them or get it wrong."
Communication author, Jefferson Fisher offered the advice below that is, I believe, suitable for many situations, especially when someone is in grief.
“My adult son just experienced two tragic deaths within three days. I don’t know how to respond when someone close to me is suffering. Do you have any suggestions on how to handle this?”
This is a tough situation. Your response needs to be sturdy and simple.
Lead with presence over language. Sit with him. Let him set the pace. Silence is care when words feel small. If you do speak, keep it short, honest, and concrete. “I’m here. I love you. I’m not going anywhere.” Avoid silver linings, explanations, or “at least” statements. This is not the time for positivity; it’s the time for company.
