The spring program usually starts somewhere in the middle. New routine, new goals, straight into week one.

Before that, it's worth a quick look downstairs.

Four checks. No equipment, and none of them are a test you can fail. They just tell you where you're actually starting from, which is surprisingly hard to find in a pile of spring advice.

Swipe through. Then start from there.

First thing I do when I get to the clinic: shoes off.

People notice. Usually it's while they're walking to the window and back, and they glance down and realise the osteo is barefoot. There's a small pause. You can watch them deciding whether to mention it.

Most don't. The ones who do get the short version.

I spent a lot of years with my feet sealed inside boots. Then I didn't. And the question that came with that change never really left: if the way you meet the ground changes this much, what else is your body quietly responding to?

That's the job, really.

The shoes just come off first.

Six months in shoes, and the first warm weekend arrives.

The temptation is to make up for lost time. A barefoot run along the Promenade. A whole afternoon in the garden. Walking to the shops just to prove a point.

Your feet will have something to say about that on Monday.

There's an order to easing back in. Soft surfaces before hard ones. Minutes before hours.

Notice what feels fine and what doesn't, and let the next step wait until the last one feels boring.

Boring is the goal.

Most people skip straight to the hard part. Then they decide barefoot isn't for them.

The step-by-step version is on the blog. Link in bio.

You came in about the shoulder.

Ten minutes later you're walking to the window and back, and I'm looking at your feet. It can feel like I've wandered off topic.

I haven't. (Well. Not this time.)

The sore spot is where you feel it. It's one clue, and a good one. It's rarely the whole story.

How you load, how you move, what's been quietly picking up the slack for months: that's usually where the useful answers live.

So yes, I'll ask about the shoulder.

I'll probably also ask about your feet.

This month's Thread landed in inboxes yesterday.

It's about why the grass feels so loud when the shoes first come off. Plus why I'll probably ask about your feet whatever you came in about, why there's a model foot parked next to my fruit bowl, and a Dispensary pick I have a slightly unreasonable personal history with.

It goes out once a month. No hard sell. Nothing you need to act on today.

Port Fairy Spring Music Festival weekend.

Which means right now, a lot of people are three hours into a very good program and a fairly ordinary chair.

Nobody goes to a festival for the seating. But by Sunday afternoon your hips will have formed opinions about it, and your lower back will want to share them.

Between sets, stand up. Walk the long way to the coffee. Shift your weight foot to foot while you queue.

Nothing clever. Your body just likes a change of position more than it likes any one position.

Enjoy the music.

Term 4 started on Monday.

Lunchboxes found. School shoes located, eventually, under something. Someone's hat is still missing and will stay missing until December.

I went back too. Not to school exactly, but back to the books: gait and foot function this time. Which, in a month where I'm mostly talking about feet, looks suspiciously well planned.

It wasn't.

Mostly it means evenings with a textbook, a highlighter and a model foot parked next to the fruit bowl.

Over twenty years of watching people walk, and feet are still handing out homework.

Every spring the advice arrives in the same order. Core. Shoulders. Mobility routine. Hamstrings, if someone's feeling generous.

Nobody starts at the floor.

Which is odd, because every time your bare foot meets the ground it changes shape, reads the pressure underneath it and reports back. Grass gives. Concrete doesn't. Your foot sorts out the difference before you've noticed there is one.

I've written up what's actually going on down there, including the bits the research won't let me claim. That's my favourite section.

(Spoiler: barefoot isn't a cure, and shoes aren't the enemy.)

The clocks go forward tonight.

Which means tomorrow evening there's an extra hour of light, and a fresh pile of spring advice about what to do with it.

The 12-week plan. The new runners. The app that wants your resting heart rate before you've had a coffee.

Here's a smaller idea.

Take your shoes off at the back step. Walk out to the clothesline.

Stand on the grass for a minute while you pretend to check whether the washing's dry. (It isn't. It never is.)

That's it. No program.

Your feet have been in storage since April, and the first thing they need isn't a plan.
It's the ground.

Move freely. Stay steady.

Reid Oval has gone quiet. The AFL Grand Final is done. For the first time since April, next weekend doesn't come with footy attached.

At almost the same moment, the light hangs around a little longer. The garden calls. The beach becomes possible after dinner. Six months of winter shoes start looking like a bit much.

Things shift.

You head into the warmer months with a clearer read on your body than you had in July. Not a perfect plan for every ache. Something more useful: a better sense of what matters, what changes load and when to pay attention.

Now that understanding goes outside.

Spring will offer no shortage of advice about how to move, train, stretch and get ready for summer. Before adding another plan, we're going lower.

Right down to where you meet the ground.

The shoes are about to come off. What's underneath them?

Move freely. Stay steady.
