🧩 What looks like play can be a great opportunity for learning!

In occupational therapy, activities are carefully chosen to match a child’s goals. A simple maze and puzzle game can help children practise planning, problem-solving, visual-motor skills and persistence, all while having fun.

Children may also learn to:
✨ Try a different strategy when something doesn’t work
✨ Stay engaged when a task is challenging
✨ Take turns and share when playing with others
✨ Build confidence through trying and learning

Parents can support these skills at home by pausing before helping and asking, “What could you try next?”

The goal isn’t to make play feel like work. It’s to create opportunities for children to learn through activities that are meaningful, engaging and enjoyable. ❤️

Does your child enjoy puzzles, mazes or building activities? Tell us in the comments!

If you have concerns about your child’s planning, problem-solving, visual-motor skills, persistence or participation in everyday activities, an occupational therapist can help.

🎯 It looks like play, but there’s a lot of learning happening!

In occupational therapy, play can be a powerful way to help children build everyday skills.

With a maze and puzzle game like this, children can practise:

🧩 Planning and problem-solving
đź‘€ Visual-motor skills
💪 Persistence when things don’t go as planned
🤝 Turn-taking and sharing
🧠 Flexible thinking and trying a new approach

The best part? Children are learning through an activity that feels fun, engaging and meaningful.

Next time your child gets stuck, try asking: “What could you try next?” instead of jumping in to help.

Because sometimes, the most meaningful learning happens when children get the chance to figure it out themselves.

Your child may be communicating more than you realise.

Communication isn't just about saying words.

A child who pushes something away may be saying “no.”
A child who takes your hand may be saying “help me.”
A child who points, gestures, uses signs, pictures or an AAC device is communicating too.

✨ Every communication attempt has meaning.

As parents and caregivers, you can help by:

đź‘€ Notice it: Pay attention to how your child is communicating.
🗣️ Respond to it: Show them that their communication has been heard.
đź’ˇ Model it: Use simple words, gestures, signs or AAC without asking them to copy you.
⏳ Give them time: Pause and give your child a chance to communicate.

The goal isn't simply to get children talking. It's to help them express their wants, needs, ideas and feelings in a way that works for them. ❤️

Does your child communicate in ways other than talking? Tell us in the comments or save this post as a reminder that every form of communication matters.

If you're concerned about your child's communication development, reach out to a speech pathologist to discuss how they can support your child.
