When I was young, anything to do with Ancient Egypt fascinated me.
The winged eyeliner, the gold, the pyramids and especially Cleopatra.
My mother had a skincare range she used. I can still see the white bottles, ornate with blue and gold papyrus leaves and the image of a woman I believed was Cleopatra, although now, I wonder if perhaps it was the Goddess Isis.
My mother was always busy. Always working. A typical old-school Italian mother, who put herself thoroughly last.
Yet, in her own small way, she tried to care for herself.
I would watch her place creams on her face, staring at her and those beautiful jars in awe.
It was such a simple thing, a bottle, a cream and an action, yet something about it demanded my attention.
It felt powerful and mysterious, almost sacred.
My mother taught me so many things. She taught me to be selfless as I grew up, it was expected of me, but she also used to say things like, “don’t do what I did”, “think about yourself”, “look after yourself.”
I didn’t know it then, but this would become part of the beginning of my own awakening,
a deep inner journey of self- empowerment and discovery.
It was awakening a passion within me.
A calling I was born to explore.
The sacred act of anointing the body with beautiful scents, oils and creams has always meant so much more to me than simply skincare or fragrance. It is a way to return to self to re-member.
There is so much to my soul’s story a continuous thread of memories, experiences and what I feel are past or parallel lives, somehow weaving themselves into the present.
And when I look at everything I create today, I can see that thread running through it all.
My skincare.
My essential oils.
My rituals.
And now, the deeper work waiting to emerge.
What a blessing!
