Sunday's looking like a proper washout in Albury-Wodonga: heavy rain on and off all day, thunderstorms likely through the middle of the day, and the rain chance hitting 80%. 🌧️

If the crew's out in it, watch the two big wet-weather hazards: slippery surfaces and cold, soaked-through clothing.

If someone slips and falls:
✔ Check they're responsive and breathing normally (DRSABCD)
✔ Don't move them if you suspect a head, neck or back injury: keep them still, warm and reassured
✔ Cover any bleeding with firm, direct pressure
✔ Broken bone? Support and immobilise it, never try to straighten it
✔ Call 000 if they're unconscious, confused, in severe pain or can't weight-bear

And if the rain cancels your weekend plans anyway. That's your sign. A wet Sunday is the perfect excuse to knock over a First Aid or CPR refresher with the team. Jackie makes it hands-on and actually enjoyable, we promise.

Choking first aid has changed, and if you learned it years ago, this one's worth a refresher.

Under current ANZCOR guidance, if a conscious adult has a severe blockage and can’t cough effectively:
✔ Give up to 5 sharp back blows between the shoulder blades, checking after each one
✔ If that hasn’t cleared it, give up to 5 chest thrusts at the CPR compression point, checking after each one
✔ Keep alternating up to 5 back blows with up to 5 chest thrusts until the blockage clears or the person becomes unresponsive
✔ If they become unresponsive, call 000 and start CPR

Abdominal thrusts (the Heimlich) are not recommended because they can cause serious internal injuries. ANZCOR recommends back blows and chest thrusts instead.

Jackie Hislop, Registered Nurse and lead trainer: “First aid guidance moves with the evidence. That's exactly why refresher training matters. The technique you learned five years ago may not be the technique that helps today.”

Albury-Wodonga, the storms are lining up for the weekend, and today is the calm one you should use.

The forecast has Saturday afternoon and evening building to a 50% chance of rain with thunderstorms possible at night, and Sunday looking wet from the early hours with thunderstorms through to mid-afternoon. Today is dry and 27°C with only a light breeze. That makes it the easy day to get sorted before the weather turns.

Before the clouds build, the jobs worth doing on site:
✔ Stack and strap down loose sheeting, timber and site signage
✔ Clear gutters, drains and downpipes so water has somewhere to go
✔ Put away anything light enough to become a projectile in a gust
✔ Charge phones and torches, and check your first aid kit is stocked and in date

And if the storm catches you out, here is the bit people forget. Flying debris and falling branches do real damage, and the first few minutes matter.

If someone is hit and bleeding heavily, press firmly and directly on the wound with a clean dressing or cloth and keep the pressure on. Do not remove an object that is embedded in a wound, just pad around it. If they have been hit by something heavy, or fallen from height, keep them still and do not move them unless they are in danger, and call Triple Zero (000). If they are not responding and not breathing normally, start CPR and send someone for the AED.

These are the exact skills we drill in our first aid courses at our Wodonga training room or on site at your workplace. Hands-on, practical, and built around what you would actually face on a job.

Snake season is here around Albury-Wodonga. If you work outdoors, on farms or in council teams, knowing what to do after a bite matters.

Old advice can cause harm. Don’t use a tourniquet, cut the wound or suck out venom. Don’t wash the bite or remove clothing.

Jackie Hislop, Registered Nurse and lead trainer, shares the right response:
✅ Keep the person still, calm and under observation.
✅ Apply a firm pressure bandage over the bite, then bandage the whole bitten limb. Splint it to keep it still.
✅ Call 000 immediately. Keep the person still while you wait for the ambulance.

Practise the pressure immobilisation technique in a hands-on first aid course, so you can act with confidence when it matters most.

Albury–Wodonga, after today’s 29°C heat, thunderstorms are forecast this weekend, with rain chances reaching 70%. Don’t let a flooded road catch you out, especially at night, when water can be hard to see.

✔ Never drive or walk through floodwater. Turn around and find another route.
✔ Stay well clear of fallen powerlines and report them to 000.
✔ If someone is caught in floodwater, call 000. Don’t enter the water to rescue them, throw flotation from a safe place.
✔ Once they’re safely out, keep them warm. If they’re unresponsive and not breathing normally, start CPR and follow the 000 call-taker’s instructions.

Be ready to respond when it matters. Our practical First Aid courses cover CPR and emergency response for workplaces and small groups.

How many first aiders does your workplace actually need? It depends on your risks, not just your headcount.

As a planning guide, Safe Work Australia suggests:
✔ Low-risk workplaces: 1 first aider per 50 workers
✔ High-risk workplaces: 1 per 25
✔ Remote, high-risk workplaces: 1 per 10

These are guides, not a universal legal ratio. Consider your hazards, shifts, site layout, worker needs and how quickly help can arrive. Check the requirements that apply to your industry and location.

Which course suits your team?
• HLTAID009 – CPR
• HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid
• HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid in an education and care setting

Jackie Hislop RN’s practical tip: count the workers on site for each shift, then check whether trained first aiders are available across every work area, not just on the roster overall.

Employers: do you know your workplace’s first aider ratio? Tell us in the comments.

Tradies and outdoor crews: spring can turn cold in a hurry! 🌦️

Albury-Wodonga is forecast to reach 29°C on Thursday, before weekend storms and a sharp cool change bring chilly mornings early next week. Monday’s forecast low is 8°C, dropping to 6°C on Tuesday. A 23-degree swing from Thursday’s high.

Pack warm, dry layers and check that your crew has somewhere sheltered to warm up. Watch for early hypothermia signs: strong shivering, fumbling hands, mumbled speech or unusual tiredness.

If someone is affected, move them to shelter, get them warm and dry, and offer a warm sweet drink only if they’re alert and able to swallow. Call 000 if they’re confused, unconscious or not improving.

Be ready to act with confidence. We deliver practical, hands-on First Aid training for workplaces and outdoor teams. Call/Text Jackie to talk through your options.

Albury-Wodonga, storms are on the forecast this weekend ⛈️ BOM is flagging thunderstorms for Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October, with a 40–50% chance of rain. Tradies and outdoor crews: secure loose gear and pack up early. Don’t wait for the rain to start.

Remember the 30/30 rule: if thunder follows a flash within 30 seconds, get inside a substantial enclosed building or hard-topped vehicle. Wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder before heading back out.

If someone is struck by lightning, call 000. It’s safe to touch them. They don’t hold an electrical charge. Check if they’re responsive and breathing normally. If they’re not breathing normally, start CPR and use an AED if available.

For the future: keep your team’s first aid skills current. 🩹

National Safe Work Month Week 3 reminds us that good WHS planning protects people for the long term, and that includes maintaining practical emergency skills.

First aid and CPR are hands-on skills. They can fade when they aren’t practised, even if a certificate is still filed away. An annual CPR refresher helps your team maintain correct technique, confidence and readiness when it matters most, not just tick a paperwork box.

💡 Jackie Hislop RN’s tip: Practise regularly so your technique stays correct and your confidence stays high.

This month, take two minutes to:
✅ Check your team’s first aid and CPR certificate expiry dates
✅ Identify anyone due for a refresher
✅ Book training before skills and confidence fade

Yatson Training offers practical refresher options on-site across Albury/Wodonga or at our Wodonga training rooms. During a cardiac emergency, call Triple Zero (000), start CPR with compressions in the centre of the chest, and use an AED as soon as one is available.

Call or text Jackie to discuss your team’s refresher needs, or visit yatsontraining.com.au.

Tradies and outdoor workers: spring heat can catch you out before your body has had time to acclimatise. Albury-Wodonga is heading for 25°C today, with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting 28°C on Thursday. Pace the work, take regular breaks and keep water handy.

Thirst, headache, dizziness and unusual fatigue can be warning signs of dehydration or heat exhaustion. If someone feels unwell:
✔ Move them to shade or a cool place
✔ Help them rest, loosen excess clothing and cool their skin
✔ If they’re alert and can swallow safely, offer small sips of water

Confused, collapsed or unconscious? Call 000 immediately. Don’t give fluids to someone who is unconscious, and stay with them while help is on the way.

A little know-how can make a big difference. Yatson Training delivers practical, hands-on First Aid training for workplaces and small groups across Albury-Wodonga. Build confidence to respond when it matters.
