What does it mean to age well? ๐ŸŒฟ

While physical health is important, our wellbeing is also shaped by the relationships we nurture, the communities we belong to and the opportunities we have to feel connected, valued and included ๐Ÿฉท

Social connection matters at every age. A conversation over a cuppa, a shared laugh, joining a local group, volunteering or simply spending time with others can help us feel a sense of belonging and purpose ๐ŸŒฟ

๐ŸŒธ๏ธ Like a tree, we thrive when our roots are strong and our connections support us through life's changing seasons

๐ŸŒธ๏ธ Our communities have an important role to play in creating welcoming, accessible and inclusive places where people of all ages, abilities and cultural backgrounds can come together, build relationships and participate in community life

๐ŸŒธ๏ธ Healthy ageing isn't just about living
longer. It's also about having opportunities to live well, stay connected and continue doing the things that give our lives meaning.

What helps you feel connected to others, and what more could our communities do to support connection and wellbeing as we grow older? ๐ŸŒฟ

Grief, Wellbeing and the Ageing Journey ๐ŸŒป

Thereโ€™s a kind of exhaustion thatโ€™s hard to explain until youโ€™ve experienced it.

The exhaustion that comes with losing someone you love and then having to sort through 50+ years of their life.

Boxes of photographs, letters, cards, clothes, ornaments, cupboards, things that hadnโ€™t been touched for years, but somehow carried a story.

Itโ€™s not just the physical work of lifting, sorting, cleaning, packing, and making decisions. Itโ€™s the emotional work.

Every object can bring a memory. Every drawer can hold a little piece of a personโ€™s life. And sometimes you have to make decisions about what to keep, what to let go of, what to donate, and what simply canโ€™t come with you.

๐Ÿ–ค It is physically exhausting
๐Ÿ–ค Emotionally exhausting
๐Ÿ–ค And mentally exhausting.

Grief doesnโ€™t always give us permission to stop.

Sometimes, we keep going because there are things that need to be done. And then, when the practical work finally slows down, we realise just how exhausted we actually are.

During Queensland Seniors Month this October, Iโ€™m reflecting on how much life can ask of us as we get older, and how important it is to look after ourselves through the difficult transitions as well as the joyful ones.

Bereavement, caring for others, downsizing, and letting go of a lifetime of memories can take a real toll, physically and emotionally.

My own recent experience has reminded me that wellbeing isnโ€™t just about staying active or healthy; itโ€™s also about giving ourselves permission to grieve, rest, ask for help, stay connected and take things one day at a time.

Grief changes us, but healing reminds us that caring for ourselves is part of continuing the journey, not leaving the person we lost behind.

Sometimes, the greatest gift we can give an older loved one is simply to listen ๐Ÿฉท

Listen to their stories about childhood, their youth, the people they loved, the things they did and the hardships they experienced. Listen to the stories theyโ€™ve told many times, and the thoughts they may never have shared before ๐Ÿฉท

These conversations are more than memories. They are connection. They help people feel heard, valued and remembered. And for an older person, that connection can mean so much ๐Ÿฉท

Listening is our superpower ๐Ÿฉท

One day, that familiar voice will be quiet. There will be no more stories to hear, no more questions to ask ๐Ÿฉท

And those stories will become our memories ๐Ÿฉท

So, while we can, make time to listen. Sit beside them. Ask another question. Let them share ๐Ÿฉท

Because one day, you may give anything to hear that story just one more time ๐Ÿฉท

Spring is a reminder that renewal doesnโ€™t have to happen all at once ๐ŸŒบ

After winter, the days grow lighter, new growth appears, and the world slowly begins to feel full of possibility again ๐ŸŒผ

Perhaps we can take the same approach in our own lives. Make space for something new. Reconnect with people who matter. Step outside. Try something different. Or simply give ourselves permission to begin again ๐Ÿƒ

Spring reminds us that change can be gentle, that growth takes time, and that there is always the possibility of a new beginning ๐ŸŒธ

Hereโ€™s to brighter days, fresh starts and making room for what comes next ๐ŸŒป

As the sand falls through the hourglass, we are reminded that time is life's most precious gift, not because it lasts forever, but because it doesn't โณ๏ธ

Every grain represents a moment, a memory, a conversation, a chance to tell someone they matter. Time slips quietly through our fingers, reminding us to cherish the people we love, embrace the moments we have, and never take tomorrow for granted ๐Ÿฉท

๐Ÿฉท Let's talk grief & loss ๐Ÿฉท

Loss changes things. It leaves quiet spaces where connection used to be. In those moments, reaching out matters more than ever. A message, a chat, or a simple "Iโ€™m here" can make all the difference ๐ŸŒธ

Weโ€™re not meant to carry grief alone ๐Ÿฉท You donโ€™t have to be an expert, just someone who cares. Check in on someone today ๐Ÿ“ž

Let's celebrate National Healthy Ageing Day ๐Ÿฉท

Supporting everyday actions that help older Australians stay independent is at the heart of

The small steps you take today shape the years ahead. On May 6, set the foundations for long-term wellbeing by committing to healthy ageing.

National Healthy Ageing Day celebrates staying strong, engaged, and connected to the people, activities, and moments that matter most as we age. This yearโ€™s theme, '๐—ž๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ ๐—ฑ๐—ผ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜„๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐˜๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€', encourages you to pause and reflect on what you value in your life.

Itโ€™s your chance to turn healthy ageing into everyday action by:

โžก๏ธ Finding an exercise
โžก๏ธ Finding an activity
