Recognizing a university-related problem is an important beginning—but identifying the problem alone does not explain how it could be improved.
A practical solution should clearly describe what needs to change, who could implement it, what resources may be required and whether it could be tested on a small scale. It should also be realistic enough for other universities to adapt.
For the National Three-Slide Challenge 2026, participants do not need to propose a large or expensive programme. A small, thoughtful and workable improvement may offer a stronger solution.

Connect your lived experience with a practical possibility for change.

A university is experienced differently by the people who study and work within it.
Students may notice barriers affecting learning, assessment, support and belonging. Faculty members, administrative staff and support employees may experience different challenges related to workload, procedures, resources, safety, recognition or dignity.

Universities can better understand these challenges by creating respectful and inclusive opportunities for people to share their experiences. Those closest to a problem may also offer the most practical ideas for improving it.

Listening is only the first step. Meaningful change begins when real experiences are considered in decisions and followed by action.

Mental health at university is shaped by more than academic pressure alone.

Teaching and assessment practices, workplace conditions, relationships, institutional procedures, inclusion and the physical environment can all influence the well-being of students and employees.
Sometimes, a small change in a university practice, service or space can make a meaningful difference. Recognizing these everyday influences is the first step towards identifying practical solutions.
What part of your university experience could be improved to support better mental health?

What do we mean by a lived experience?

It is an experience you have personally encountered and understand through its real-life effects. Within a university, this might relate to academic pressure, workplace conditions, access to support, campus facilities, inclusion, dignity or belonging.

For the National Three-Slide Challenge 2026, participants should identify one genuine university-related experience, explain how it affects mental health or well-being and propose a practical solution that other universities could also adapt.

Your experience matters. Your insight could help create healthier university campuses.

Psychiatry has long operated on a neurotransmitter model of mental illness too little serotonin causes depression, too much dopamine causes psychosis. That framework is being fundamentally displaced. A sweeping 2025 meta-analysis from the Central Institute of Mental Health in Mannheim, Germany, analyzing neuroimaging, biomarker, and post-mortem brain tissue data from over 50,000 patients across 12 major psychiatric conditions, found that neuroinflammation chronic activation of microglial cells and elevated pro-inflammatory cytokine levels in the brain is present in virtually every major mental health disorder studied, including depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, PTSD, OCD, anorexia, and autism spectrum disorder.

The evidence points to neuroinflammation not merely as a correlate of mental illness, but as a primary causal driver. Chronically activated microglia release IL-1, IL-6, and TNF-, which disrupt synaptic transmission, impair neurogenesis, destroy myelin integrity, and critically suppress the tryptophan-kynurenine pathway, redirecting the building blocks of serotonin synthesis toward the production of neurotoxic quinolinic acid instead. This single metabolic shift may explain both the serotonin deficit in depression and the concurrent glutamate dysfunction in psychosis unified by a common inflammatory trigger.

What ignites the neuroinflammation? The German team identified a convergent set of upstream triggers: gut dysbiosis, early life adversity, chronic sleep disruption, obesity, viral infections particularly herpesvirus family members, and air pollution. Anti-inflammatory interventions including minocycline, celecoxib, omega-3 fatty acids, and microbiome modulation are now in Phase II and III trials for multiple psychiatric conditions.

Treating mental illness as brain inflammation may be the reframing that psychiatry has needed for a generation.

What are your thoughts on this shift from a chemical imbalance to a brain inflammation model? How might this change the future of mental healthcare?
