It’s time to stop being afraid.

Pain doesn’t equal damage. Save & Share ❤️

Over the weekend we met a lot of wonderful individuals unfortunately all in pain or seeking out help for someone they know.

A common thing we heard was:

“I have back pain, I slipped a disc. Is this something you can help with?” 😢

Now our first thought is always 💕tell me more💕 as we want to understand what they are going through to see if we are a good fit to help them.

Our second thought it’s WHO TOLD YOU YOUR DISC SLIPPED 🙃.We are slightly upset with them 😒 .

Did being told you slipped your disc help you ?

…Or did it make you
❌Fear motion
❌Limit your activities
❌See your body as fragile

Discs don’t slip! They can budge.They can herniate…but they don’t slip

✨Even if you do have a bulge or herniation it might not be the reason you have pain.✨

Did you know that approximately 80% of scans in individuals WITHOUT pain have shown bulges or herniations

This is similar to our previous post on how imaging can show arthritis or degenerative disc disease in individuals that do NOT have pain.

Are you still experiencing symptoms from a previous concussion !? 🤕

Often we hear people tell us they have recovered from a previous concussion because the major “red flag” 🚩 symptoms have diminished such as headaches, nausea and sensitivity to light 💡…

What some individuals are not aware of is that there are some lesser known symptoms that could be still very much present that they have written off as “normal”

These symptoms include mood changes 😢 , concentration issues, change in appetite 🍎 and sleep habits. 😴

You can also experience a concussion where only these lesser known symptoms are present and without the “red flag” symptoms, a concussion could go undiagnosed and untreated 😣

We hope this post can educate you on the lesser known symptoms of concussions or potentially encourage you to seek out treatment for a concussion you thought was healed that may still be lingering ✨

Do your toes and feet need some love ?🥲

Did the little piggy go to market and never come back ? 🐷

All valid questions.

Sometimes just sitting down and getting off your feet isn’t enough.

This is especially true when you have to get back on your feet again and again.

Life doesn’t stop and it can be frustrating when it feels like your feet can’t keep up with you.

Ideally this is where an assessment comes in.🧐

There are several contributing factors for why you experience discomfort in your feet including but not limited to:
🙋🏼‍♀️Your shoes !
🙋🏻‍♀️Ankle / mid foot mobility & strength
🙋🏽‍♀️Hip mobility and strength
🙋🏾‍♀️Distruption in balance/ stabilization systems
🙋🏿‍♀️ Toe mobility & strength

To get to the route cause of your discomfort, treatment and exercise should be specific to you.

In the mean time, here are a combination of mobility and strengthening exercises to help show your toesis some love!

Go slowly through each exercises focusing on what you feel.

Benefits of the KNEELING SQUAT 👏🏼

SAVE this exercise for later 📌

Benefits of the Kneeling Squat include:

🤍 Improve your forward bend
🤍 Enhance your squat form
🤍 Prevent injury
🤍 Boost your glute strength
🤍 Set up good foundations to reduce low back pain
🤍 & more!

The goal of this move is to focus on HINGING from your hips as you sit back into the movement. Make sure to squeeze your GLUTES throughout the move! 🍑

This exercise can be done using body weight, a band, or weights 👍🏼

⚠️ You may place a pillow or foam under your knees is kneeling causes pain. Do not continue any exercise that causes you pain. Please reach out if you are unsure if this exercise is right for you.

Does completing your rehab exercises feel like a chore ?

This may come as a surprise but as health care practitioners, we are not here to make you feel guilty about not doing your exercises 😳

Sure we may encourage you to move more often and find out what is holding you back from completing your rehab more but it is not our goal to guilt you into doing it.

You have to want to do your exercises.

Want to get out of pain.

Not for us.

For you.

A big part of your recovery journey is the time away from your therapist.

A 1 hour treatment compared to the 168 hours in a week is a very low percentage of time dedicated to healing and moving better.

If you feel like you are having more missed days then completed days or don’t have enough time to complete your rehab routine, talk to your health care practitioner and let’s get you motivated to be better. . . without the guilt !

Getting the most out your recovery journey starts with you and finding a team that helps build you up !

Here are 5 tips to make the best of your rehab

What is ECCENTRIC TRAINING !? 💪🏼

Eccentric training is the act of slowing down and controlling a muscle while it is lengthening 🧐

So why is this helpful?

Injuries are most likely to occur when a muscle is in its lengthening (eccentric) phase 😤

In order to prevent these types of injuries in sport or daily life, we need to train the muscle in this eccentric phase 🏋🏼‍♀️

So what does that look like ? 👀

The easiest way to think of the eccentric phase of a movement is the “negative” of the movement

💪🏼 Bicep Curl Eccentrics: focus on lowering the weight slowly and controlled while the bicep is lengthening before you curl back up in the shortening (concentric) phase

🏋️ Squat Eccentrics: focus on slowly getting into the squat position while you quads are lengthening before pushing yourself back up in the concentric phase

🦶🏽 Calf Raise Eccentrics: focus on the slow lowering down part of the movement while your calf is lengthening before you push your heels back up off the ground

What area do you always feel tight in?

Although stretching can be be beneficial, it doesn’t actually make significant long term changes in muscle length…

Now muscle length is likely not the reason why you’re tight or sore anyway 🤭

What makes one person more flexible than another often comes down to the nervous system.

Nerve & joint stretch tolerance and the nervous systems interpretation of feeling safe in the range of motion you are asking to go in will help to determine how “flexible you are” a lot of the time 🤓

If you have to do something like stretching day after day, just to do it again tomorrow, you should have a good reason why are repeating it and it shouldn’t be:

❌Because I was told to
❌Because I’m not flexible
❌Because I always get tight here

Should we quote Albert Einstein’s definition of insanity ? 🧐

Don’t do something just because.

Practice with purpose ❤️

So how can you improve flexibility and decrease tension?
