Can I let you in on a secret?

Today is a beautiful fall day here in south-central Ontario. It’s probably THE last day I’ll get to wear a tank top for my outdoor training. These days, I find it really easy to get outside and be active when the weather cooperates like this. But there were days when I couldn’t even get started.

And now the days are getting shorter. The weather will be colder and more rainy, and that makes it harder to get out. I’m not a huge fan of cold, damp weather. That’s not surprising - I don’t know anybody who is. It’s always easier to stay inside. It’s easier to read a book under a blanket.

It’s those days - the days that you show up, even when you don’t want to - that make the difference in training and in health.

I don’t always want to do it. So on those days, I need to dig into my motivation techniques to get myself on the go. And when I first started, I needed those same techniques to lace up my shoes, even on a good day.

Now I’d like to share those techniques with you. You see, once you start to understand motivation, and once you start to understand your barriers and obstacles, then you can create a plan that works. So let me show you how!

I created a free 17 minute training so that you can start to Master Your Motivation.

For fun, here’s a photo of me on my 10.5 km recovery walk, enjoying the beautiful weather, a crazy-blue sky and the changing fall colours!

It's International Coffee Day! Did I ever mention that I love coffee?

I have a few good reasons to use it in sport too. Here my top five reasons for using caffeine to enhance sport performance:

1. Caffeine mobilizes free fatty acids - that means you use more fats for fuel

2. Caffeine spares muscle glycogen - meaning that you have a little extra gas left in the tank for those intermittent hard efforts (like hill climbs, or a strong finish!)

3. Caffeine lowers your rate of perceived exertion - meaning that your work effort doesn’t feel as difficult as it normally would

4. Caffeine enhances focus - meaning that your head can stay in the game longer, react quicker, and be more accurate - even when you’re tired

5. Caffeine has an analgesic effect - so the pain of a hard effort can be diminished just a little bit :)

6. I know, I said five, but I remembered one more! Caffeine can improve glycogen resynthesis post-workout - so you can get more energy back into your muscles sooner, and recover more quickly for your next session.

Need help fitting caffeine into your training and performance plan? Send me a message - I can help!

Today is National Coffee Day and I almost missed it! I LOVE coffee, and caffeine is one of my favourite performance enhancers.

But most athletes don't use it properly and end up like this cyclist below (thanks to Cycling Today for this meme). Still tired, but with jitters!

You can't just use it on a whim - it has to be part of your nutrition and fueling plan. And if you don't have one of those, you NEED one, and I can help.

Ever tried acupuncture for pain?

There are couple of of different ways to apply it, and my favourite way to use it is is called dry needling of myofascial trigger points (sometimes it's called IMS, Gunn technique, and a few others). It's basically putting an acupuncture into a muscle to create a specific response.

Four really cool things happen when we do that, and they all work together to reduce pain, and improve the overall functioning of the muscle. The model below summarizes the effects, but you can read more about it on my blog here https://traceyteasdale.com/f/why-you-should-consider-acupuncture-for-your-trigger-points

Have you tried it? How did it work for you? If you haven't tried it, would you like to? I'd love to hear your experiences and answer any questions you might have.

Today was my first day back at the office, providing some much-needed acupuncture for patients.

Did you know that acupuncture can help to reduce pain, reduce stress and anxiety, improve range of motion, improve sleep, and ultimately improve your quality of life?

I'm still offering virtual care, but I have opened up a few in-person appointments for those who need acupuncture, injections, physical assessments, and other hands-on therapies.

Have you tried acupuncture yet?

You're invited back to the office!

After months of shut-down and virtual-only visits, I'm very happy to announce that I'll be back in the clinic starting this week.

If you've been missing your acupuncture treatments, cupping or instrument treatments, I'd love to welcome you to book an appointment for a tune-up. I know it has been a long haul over the last few months, with limited access to your health care providers. Trust me, we've missed you too!

It will look a bit different in the office, as we comply with the Ministry off Health's COVID requirements. That includes extra hand sanitizing stations, spaced out reception area, masks, plexiglass barriers where required, increased time between visits to sanitize all surfaces, and more.

To keep you safe, I will continue to provide virtual sessions as a default for EVERYTHING that doesn't require you to come in to the clinic. If you've ever used FaceTime, Skype, Messenger video calls, or any other video call platform, virtual visits look exactly the same. You can join from any device with a camera and a microphone, from the comfort of your home or office. I can also do a plain-old telephone call too. You just need to be in a quiet, private space.

If you are coming into the office for any hands-on treatments or assessments, please note that you will be required to wear a mask or face covering (please bring your own if you have one). You will also need to complete a pre-visit screening for COVID symptoms and exposures. This helps us to keep all of our patients, our staff, and our practitioners healthy and safe.

Booking an appointment for in-person or telemedicine sessions is easy. Simply send me a message and we can find a time that works. I'm also happy to answer any questions you might have about the new processes in the clinics. As always, your health and safety is my number one priority.

If I hosted some free health, wellness and performance webinars, would you be interested?

I often do public seminars in the community, but haven't been recently (due to obvious reasons).

I'm thinking of taking them online for now, and doing either live-streaming through Facebook, or privately via Zoom.

What would you like to learn about? What are your biggest questions right now? What supports would you find useful?

I'd love to hear what you need - let me know in the comments

Anyone else been working through a funk? 🙄

With all the races being cancelled and postponed, I had been feeling pretty lost and unmotivated. Although my goal race isn't cancelled yet, I'm betting that it will be.

Add to that the extra uncertainty in the world. And with massive changes to my schedule and responsibilities, there have been a lot of adjustments required.

It's so hard being in limbo when competing in your sport is part of your identity. 🤷🏻‍♀️

So how can you keep going? How can you stay motivated? How can you stay safe? How can you avoid injury when you can't get in to see your favourite sport support services (hello acupuncture and manual therapies!)? How can you avoid burnout? How can you make sure your body can handle the stress of training AND the extra stressors we now have to manage? How can you keep your immune system in check when endurance exercise can actually suppress it? How can you keep your eyes on the prize, when you don't even know what the prize is anymore?

I've been working through all of this for myself, and my athletic clients over the last month. I've sorted out a system to keep us motivated, focused and determined.

Drop me a line below👇if you want some support in this crazy time.

For fun, here's a photo of me on my bike trainer today! I rode a virtual route in the UK 🚴🏻‍♀️

We're all worried about spreading a virus, but there are lots of other positive things that are contagious too!

On my run today, I made a point to greet everyone I saw outside (from a responsible distance). A quick hello, a brief conversation, or even just a wave from across the street. Even a quick hello with the postal worker as we steered clear of each others' paths.

What have you done today to bring a smile to someone else's face?

Even though running and triathlon are individual sports, there is a huge social aspect to them. I used to be able to meet up with a friend, or a group of friends and go for a run or a bike ride, or meet at the pool for a swim. But that’s no longer an option.

So today, I tried an experiment. I met up with a friend for a run this morning. But we met over the phone!

She laced up her shoes and I laced up mine. We went for our solo runs, but just chatted over the phone like we would have in person. I have to say that it worked really well! It was great to catch up, and also to have some company on my run.

Here are some tips if you want to “meet up” for a run or a walk.

1. Be careful of the wind - it can make the conversation a bit choppy
2. Pick quiet streets so that you are not disrupted by too much vehicular traffic
3. Be prepared for people to look at you funny! It’s not every day they see people running and talking to themselves ;)

Have you been creative with your physical activity? How have you been adapting? I’d love to hear what you have been up to!

As competitions and races are being cancelled and postponed, are you finding it difficult to stay motivated?

Is it difficult to access your regular training facility?

Are you unable to practice with your team?

Have you been able to work out a new workout schedule with your new demands and limitations?

Taking a short break can be good - for both your body and your mind, but know that there IS an evidence-based way to help maintain your strength, power and fitness.

Comment below with how you have been adapting!

Anyone else feeling a million different emotions these days?

I've been having virtual consults with patients around adjusting to a new normal in the midst of uncertainty. It seems we're all going through a bit of a rollercoaster with the highs and lows.

I haven't been immune either - transitioning between anxious and calm, worried and happy, frustrated and grateful.

How are you managing? What supports do you need?Comment below - I'd love to hear from you!

03/23/2020

Due to the current public health climate, and on recommendations from the Ministry of Health, the governments and the College of Naturopaths of Ontario, I will no longer be seeing patients in person until it is safe to do so.

I am able to offer my consultations via telemedicine through a secure platform. These consults can be either video or audio, and can be joined from any computer or smart device. Obviously this means that I am not able to offer any physical treatments, or physical exams, however all other options are still on the table, so-to-speak. If you need any further assessments, we can discuss to risks and benefits of seeking those at the time of the consult.

If you have an appointment booked with me, I will be switching it to a video consult. If you would like to make any changes to your appointment, please let me know.

As always, I am accepting new patients and am happy to set up a "Meet the Doctor" appointment if you'd like to learn how we can work together.

I look forward to seeing you online!

If your inbox and social media feeds look anything like mine, it's surely filled with updates around COVID-19. I hope this one doesn't get lost among them!

I wanted to take a brief moment to let you know what's happening at my office locations. As always, my treatment tables, equipment and tools are all sanitized with hospital-grade disinfectants. I wash my hands and use hand sanitizer between patients, and before making physical contact with patients. There is no change here - just the usual infection control you would expect in a health care setting!

The offices are cleaned on a regular basis, but we will be taking more precautions by sanitizing things more frequently than we already do.

I have been offering secure video consults for quite some time now. If you are feeling unwell, have a fever of 38C/101F, are experiencing new upper respiratory symptoms, feel you need to self-quarantine, or are concerned about possible exposure, I am more than happy to offer virtual care. Just let me know ahead of time so that I can make sure you have the proper link to join your appointment.

Other than that, it's business as usual for my practice!

I read a quote the other day in my planner. It said, “Exercise won’t help you live longer, just younger” (Anonymous).

The truth is - it actually does both! Time after time, studies have shown a reduction in chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, cancers, mental health, neurodegenerative diseases, osteoporosis, sarcopenia (loss of muscle mass as we age). It also helps reduce stress, balance blood sugar, improve circulation and heart health, improve sleep quality, and so much more.

If you’re looking for guidance on how to add meaningful movement and activity into your life, I can help.

Just for fun, here was my activity today! I’m training for a half marathon, so today was a hill training day. It builds strength, stamina, and mental fortitude. It also makes you focus on form and breathing quality. But don’t worry, I won’t make you run if it’s not your thing!
