INKINESS 😉
Meet Tippler’s Bane - the common ink cap (Coprinopsis atramentaria)!
Some identifying clues:
• Grey to grey-brown caps, egg-shaped when young and becoming bell-shaped.
• Fine grooves running down the cap.
• White, hollow stems.
• Crowded gills that change from white to grey, then black, eventually dissolving into “ink.”
• Often grows in clusters near buried or decaying wood.
Alcohol warning!
It contains coprine, which interferes with the body’s ability to break down alcohol. Combining the two can cause flushing, nausea, vomiting, dizziness and heart palpitations.
Avoid alcohol for at least 3 days before and 3 days after eating these mushrooms - not just during the meal!
